Abstract
955,601. Making radiator &c. gills; stamping; shearing. S. A. DES USINES CHAUSSON. July 20, 1960, No. 26482/60. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. Apparatus for making radiator &c. gills 36<SP>1</SP>, 36<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 15, comprises a feeder 31, Fig. 1, for forming and delivering a strip or strips 36, 37 to a magazine 30 from which they are fed by a second feeder 8 to a press 6 for punching the gill-apertures and simultaneously shearing from the strips the gills punched in the preceding operation, and a piling device 9 for inserting the separated gills into a filler 32. The press 6, feeder 8 and the piling device 9 are driven by an electromotor 2 connected by a belt-drive and an electromagnetic clutch 4 to a cam-shaft 5 which reciprocates the press-slide horizontally, through connecting rods. A shaft 11, driven by gears 12 from shaft 5, drives the second feeder 8 and piling device 9, through bevel-gears 15, 16 and shafts 18, 21, respectively. Strip feeding, forming and joining by rolls.- Milled rollers 45, 53, in two passes A, B at different levels and each supplied by one or the other of two reels 36a, 36b or 37a, 37b, form the strips to the shape shown in Fig. 6 while feeding them to the magazine. The rollers 53 are in carriages 56 biased by springs 57 and operated by a lever-controlled cam 62 for opening the rollpass. Drive for the rollers from a variablespeed motor is by belts to a pulley 52 on a shaft 49 geared at 50 to gears on the rollershafts 46 which mesh with gears on the shafts of rollers 53. The motor (not shown) is mounted pivotally and remotely controlled by flexible couplings, pinions and chains. The strips each pass between sensing rolls 83, 85 and entry rolls 65, 76, the sensing rolls 85 being mounted on bell-crank levers 87 biased by springs 90 to carry abutments 88 on the levers towards switches 80 for operating jacks 79, Fig. 4, controlling the pivotal movement of rollers 76 towards and away from rollers 65. During feeding strip from the reels 36a, 37a, the presence of the strips between the ribbed and grooved sensing rolls 83, 85 holds them apart, the entry rolls 76 being in the open positions, and the strip from the other reels 36b, 37b passing around the rolls 65 into pass-guides 93. As the strip-ends from reels 36a, 37a pass the sensing rolls, allowing them to come together and the abutments to operate the switches 80, the jacks 79 close the gap between rolls 65, 76 and cause the leading ends of the strips from reels 36b, 37b to enter the roll pass, overlapping the trailing ends of the strips from reels 36a, 37a. The strip-ends are folded together in the roll passes, as shown in Fig. 6. The rolls 76 are again opened when fresh reels 36a, 37a are positioned with the strip-ends passing between the sensing rolls and located in the pass-guides to be joined to the trailing ends of the strips from reels 36b, 37b. The milled rolls 102, 108, Fig. 7, of the second feeder are mounted on a carriage 94 adjustable by a bolt 96 and have operative zones A, B at different levels for feeding both strips to the press intermittently. The roll 108 is pressed by springs 114 towards the driven roll 102 and may be withdrawn by gears 110 operated by a bolt 111. Drive from the shaft 18 to the rolls is through a device C, a shaft 123, bevel gear 120, 121, a shaft 117 and a gear 118 on the roll-shaft which engages teeth in a socket 119. The device C, converting continuous rotation of the shaft 18 into intermittent rotation of shaft 123, comprises a block 141, Fig. 9, connected to the shaft 18 and having a slideway 145 for a slide 135 that has two rolls 134, 151 and is biased by a spring 149, Fig. 8. The roll 134 runs in a cam-groove 133 in a stationary ring 129, roll 151 engaging a slot 128 in a block 127 on the shaft 123. Part of the cam-groove 133 is concentric with the shaft 18, and when this part is being traversed by the roll 134, Fig. 8, roll 151 is on the axis of shaft 18 and no rotation of shaft 123 occurs, the shaft 123 being rotated during the rest of the traverse of roll 134, when the cam 133 moves the slide 135 and draws the roll 151 off-centre. A plate 173 on the shaft 123 is locked between feed steps by the engagement in a notch in the plate of a pin (Fig. 12, not shown), carried by a lever 169 on a rod 162 having a lever 163 at its other end. A follower (Fig. 11, not shown), on this lever is biased against a cam 160 which permits the follower and the pin on lever 169 to move inwardly between feed steps. Gill piling or transferring.-The gills 36<SP>1</SP>, 36<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 15, are projected on to platforms 185<SP>1</SP>, 185<SP>2</SP> beneath fences 183, 184 on levers 190, 195<SP>1</SP>, 195<SP>2</SP> operated through a rod 180 by a cam 23 on the shaft 21 to raise the fences for discharge of the gills by pushers 215, Fig. 14. These are carried by a slide 206 reciprocated in inclined ways 207, 208 by a lever 199 operated by a cam (Fig. 16, not shown), that is driven through bevel-gears 25, 26, Fig. 1, from shaft 21. The severed gills are pushed into the filler 32 and the pushers returned before the second feeder advances the strips in the press.
