Description

April 4, 1961 E. M. ARTHUR 2,977,674
PLIERS Filed Aug. 4, 1958 Inventor United Sttes PLIERS Evan Meirion Arthur, The Elms, Rednal Road, West Heath, Birmingham, England Filed Aug. 4, 1958, Ser. No. 752,953
1 Claim. (Cl. 29-429) be contracted tobe removed from a groove in the bore of a member, which pliers can be used both for expand- H ing or contracting .a spring ring by moving the handgrips atent O Patented Apr. 4, 1961 grips together as indicated by arrow b. The pivot pin 3 form heads to hold the levers together, whilst leaving the handgrip part 2a free to slide thereon under a head on the pin 3. The levers on the operative side of the pivot have bent over portions 8 which lie at right angles to the handgrip ends, that is to say parallel to the pivot axis of the pin 3, so that the projections 8 on the ends of the levers are parallel whilst moving towards or from one another. With this arrangement, the engaging ends or pins 8a of the operative jaws of the pliers can easilybe seen by the operator, which facilitates engaging the pins 8a in the holes in the split ring. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
Pliers having pins on the operative jaws for engaging a split retaining ring for expanding or contracting same, comprising two levers, a-pivot pin on which the levers are mounted, each lever comprising a handgrip portion; on
of the pliers together. The invention hasfor its object pliers of the type set forth which can be used for either expanding or contracting a split ring and readily con,-
I verted from one use to the other. A further object of the invention isa simple and robust construction. Referring to the drawings: 1
Figure 1 is a face view of a pair of pliers. constructed 1 according to this invention.
Figure 2 is aside elevation of a portion of the pliers shown by Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a portion of a lever detached. 7
According to a convenient embodiment of this invention, two levers 1 and 2 are pivoted together intermediate theirends and the handgrip portion 2a of one lever,
outward from the pivot,'is made separate and adapted to be fixed in either of two positionsto the portion 2b of the lever having an operative jaw thereon and extending outwardly fromthe'pivot'3 in relation to the handgrip .ofthe a other lever 1; The separate .handgrip 2a has a close ended slot 4 therein which is engaged on the pivot pin 3 of the levers. The other part 2b of the lever, beyond the pivot pin '3, has 'a quadrant-shaped tail-piece 5 in the form of a quadrants and has two notches 6 therein at right angles to one another. .Theseparate handgrip 2a has a' one side of the pivot pin and an operative jaw portion on the other side, the ends of the operative jaw portions" being bent outwardly at right angles and carrying said ring expanding pins, one lever having a separate operative jaw portion formed separately from a separate hand grip portion, and both said separate parts being mounted to pivot on said pivot pin, a quadrant shaped tail piece on pivoting such separate handgrip portion on said pivot pin,
the slots in the said quadrant tail piece being separated by an angle so that When said projection is engagedin one notch the separate hand grip lies on one side of the other hand grip and when engaged in the other notch it lies on the other side of said other hand grip, so that when the hand grips are moved towards one another, the operative jaws will be moved together in; one position and away from one another in the other position.
projection 7 pressed therefromto project fromthe inner} one notch- 6 thehandle endsof the levers are angularly arranged as indicated by b'roken lines so thatby pulling Ifaceof thehandgrip and such projection 7, is adapted to I (:engage the notches 6 and by engaging :the projection in 1,123,243
the handgrips together as indicatedgby arrows c a split ring can be contracted and when l'arrangedin the other notch, the split ring can be expanded by pulling the hand- ReferencesCited in the fileof this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS.
