5 Claims. (Cl. 46-220) This invention relates to a wheel and wheel stick combination, and particularly to a special wheel, which may be varied in eccentricity, and a starting and propelling stick for the wheel which may -be attached to the wheel when not in use.
Sticks for starting and propelling hoops are well known, as evidenced yby U.S. Patent No. 2,381,581, of August 7, 1945. The present wheel stick has some of the characteristics of the hoop stick disclosed in this patent but is constructed differently to provide a straight-sided channel and a pin or post to which the special wheel may be attached during storage. The special wheel is not a hoop but a wheel having a center web with special shaped Y spaced openings, into one or more of which weights may be inserted to give the wheel different degrees of eccentricity to increase or decrease the difficulty in propelling it with the wheel stick.
The principal object of the invention,'therefore, is to vary the eccentricity of a special wheel to be propelled by a special propelling stick.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination of `a rolling wheel and propelling stick.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rolling wheel which may be varied in eccentricity and started and propelled by a special stick to which the wheel may be attached when not in use.
A better understanding of this invention may Ibe had from the following detailed description when read in connection with the yaccompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the invention in use;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the special wheel embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the special stick embodying the invention;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 5 5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a' cross-sectional view taken along the line 6 6 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a front elevantional view of the wheel and stick attached;
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 8 8 of Fig. 2; Y
Fig. 9 is an end view of one of the openings in the wheel; and
Fig. l is a cross-sectional view showing the internal construction of one of the openings in the wheel.
Referring now to the drawings in which the same reference numerals refer to the same elements, a Wheel shown generally at has a rim 6 which is crowned as shown in Fig. 8 to provide better guiding of the wheel.
The rim 6 is mounted onor is integral with a central web 7 in which is radially disposed a plurality of equally spaced openings or holes within bosses 10, the interior of the openings being double tapered toward the center Sttes aten with spaced knife-edged ridges 11 along the tapered sides. (See Figs. 9 and 10.) The purpose of this construction and conliguration of the openings in bosses 10 is to hold eccentricity-varying weights within the openings. (See Fig. 8.) These weights, which are of metal but which may be of different configurations, a ball weight being shown at 12, may be easily inserted and removed rom the holes to provide any amount of eccentricity desired. A plurality of annular stitiening ridges are provided at 13. One hole is always left open to attach the wheel to the stick 14, which will now be described.
The stick has a combination I and H type configuration. There are two outer side panels 16 and 17 which are tapered at the handle end 18 and at the crosshead end 19. The channel between the panels 16 and 17 starts just below a wheel fastening o-r mounting peg. 21, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and continues to increase in depth to the point 22, as shown in Fig. 5, where it begins to decrease in depth to the end where the crosshead 23 is attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 6. The crosshead is tapered and curved at its ends 25 and 26 with a slight upward curvature. The handle has a hole 27 therein for hanging the stick and wheel assembly on a hanger 28, as shown in Fig. 7.
The purpose of this combination of wheel and stick is to vary the amount of eccentricity and determine how long or how far the wheel may be moved by the stick before it falls over. The wheel is started, as shown in Fig. l, by placing its rim 6 in the channel just below the peg 21 and letting it run down the channel in the stick and o the crosshead 23, after which the wheel is propelled by the crosshead against the rim of the wheel. As the channel in the stick has straight parallel sides, the wheel will stay in the channel as it runs down the stick, since it cannot crawl out of the channel. Thus, the wheel will always be properly started, the skill of the operator then being required to keep it rolling.
We claim:
1. A wheel adapted to be propelled vby a stick Iapplied to the rim of said wheel, said wheel comprising an outer crowned rim, a web within said rim, a plurality of bosses having openings therein, weights positioned in certain of said openings to make said wheel eccentric, and means within said openings for holding saidweights within said openings.
2. A wheel in accordance with claim 1 in which said means within said openings in said bosses are double tapered toward the centers of said openings, said openings being provided with a plurality of longitudinal ridges therein for holding said weights therein.
3. A wheel adapted to be propelled by a stick applied to the rim of said wheel, said wheel comprising a crowned rim with a central web, a plurality of bosses spaced radially from the center of said web and near the rim of said wheel, said [bosses having substantially cylindrical openings therein extending transversely of said web, weights in certain of said openings, and means within said bosses to hold said weights within said openings.
4. A Wheel in accordance with claim 3 in which said web has a plurality of annular stitening ribs thereon.
5. A wheel in accordance with claim 3 in which the openings in said bosses are double tapered toward said web, knife-edged ridges lbeing provided in said openings to hold said weights therein.
