Be it known that 1, JOHN M. GEIEs'r, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Sewing- Machine Attachments, of which the following,

in connection with. the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

In the drawings, Figure l is a top or plan view of a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge or front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a top View, the same being a modification in the form of construction shown in, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an edge or front view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of the holder shown in Fig. 1, and showing its relation to the=bed-plate of a sewing-machine, and to a portion of a sewing-machine, attachment secured to the bed-plate by means of theholder. Like letters of reference indicate like parts. The purpose of my invention is to make a simple and inexpensive device by means of which sewing-machine attachments, or portions thereof, may be attached with accuracy and facility to the bed-plate of. a sewing-machine. A represents the bed-plate or cloth-plate of a sewing-machine.

B and B are the shuttle-race slides, and C isthe serrated feed-plate. V

D is the holder. The holder D consists of a sheet-metal plate having the form, by preference, of a frame-like structure, as shown, from the body or main portion of which project the tongue or flexible lug a and the depending lugs a a. The tongue or lug a is bent downward slightly at or near its junction with the main part of the frame or holder, and then extends horizontally from that side of the frame from which it projects, and is slightly arched, as indicated in the drawings. The lugs a a are located to enter the opening formed by withdrawing the slide B, and the tongue a is adapted and arranged to lie below the inner end of that slide when the latter is in its closed position, as indicated by the dotted or broken lines at a in Fig. 5. Two of the lugs a a, as will be perceived, are located to be pinched between the ends of the slides B and B and the throat-plate, and all are in contact either with some fixed part of the bed-plate'or with the throat-plate E, which is held rigidly in its place while the machine is in use.

. In order to arrange the holder D in its proper place withrelation to the bed-plate of the machine, I withdraw. the slide B, and place the holder in the opening so made, the tongue or and lugs a a being downward. I then close the slide B, the inner end of which, on being closed, will move over the tongue a, and be in contact therewith, thus exerting a downward pressurethereon. Thesaid tongue,beingsomewhat spring-like or yielding, will permit the slide B to close with facility, and the holder will be held firmly down, being also pinched by the corners of the said slide when the latter is closed, as indicated in Fig. 5.

It will be perceived that the lower portions of attachments, .consistingof an upper and lower group of parts, may have their lower group readily attached to the bed-plate in proper position for work, by beingsuitably attached or connected to the holder D, the essential parts of which are those now referred to, provision being made, as may be required,

for attaching the holder to attachments or parts of attachments of various classes.

In the example shown I have adapted the holder D for connecting to the bed-plate the I lower parts of a tucker or plaiter of the class shown and described in Letters Patent No. 268,398, granted to me December 5, 1882.

F is an arm carrying one of thehorns of a plaiter of the class referred to, and this arm passes through openings or slots 1) b in upwardly-bent parts or wings of the holder D, and also underneath a small lug, c, on a supplemental arm, (1, of the said holder, the arm cl also being provided with a foot, d, and a scroll, d. It will be perceived that the armF will be permanently and adj ustably connected to the holder D by bending down the lug a over the said arm after the latter has been passed through the slots b b. I have provided means for temporarily locking the arm F in any position in which it may be set with relation to the holder D; but I here make no further reference thereto, as I have described the same in another application, Serial No. 110, 871, filed herewith.

In the modification of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the holder D is varied in form merely, so as to permit two of thelugs a a to enter the openings at the ends of the slot in which the serrated feed-plate plays or moves; but the tongue a is still adapted and arranged to be pressed by the under face of the slide B, for the purpose already explained, the said modified form of construction being held down in place by the said plate, and being prevented by the lugs a a, as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, from being twisted out of its proper place, it only being essential for the latter purpose that some of thelugs a a should enter openings in the cloth-plate, and be prevented from being moved therein while the attachment is being used.

The holder may be applied quickly to the machine, and the attachment or part of an attachment connected to the holder will always be arranged with accuracy with relation to the needle by the mere act of applying the holder to the machine.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A holder for connecting attachments or parts of attachments to sewing-machines, the said holder consisting of a removable plate, D, having thereon the depending and horizontallyprojecting yielding tongue (1 and one or more depending lugs, a a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
