1 Claim. (Cl. 30-68) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in razors, more particularly in razors having a triangular head. The conventional safety razor, while relatively efiiicient in shaving smooth areas and the like, leaves much to be desired when shaving the upper lip, around the nose, cleft chin and the like.
Furthermore, the conventional razor, when used normally, obstructs the view of the user considerably.
The invention overcomes these disadvantages by providing a razor with a triangular head, said razor having novel means for attaching and detaching the head from the body thereof and which enables the blade to be changed readily and which furthermore permits the razor to be rinsed clean with the minimum of effort.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a razor of the character herewithin described which, due to the configuration of the head, enables the user to have a clearer view of the area being shaved.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is particularly suited for use for shaving the hair from the upper lip, around the nostrils and under the arms, etc.
A yet further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which, due to the configuration thereof, is particularly suitable for hospital use wherein the patient is being prepared. for operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the head can be released and secured by one hand and in which the thumb release is held firmly in place by a spring within the barrel of the razor.
Still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the head can be released and raised by spring pressure sufficiently to rinse same clean but without fully detaching the head from the body portion.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, and consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a side sectional elevation of the device with the head in the open or detachable position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but fragmented in part and showing the head in the secured position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary portion of the side of the barrel where the thumb lever is pivoted thereto.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the detachable head parfay.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail, it will be seen from the accompanying drawing that provides an elongated hollow handle 1 which preferably tapers inwardly from the base 2 thereof towards the States Patent 9 i Patented Mar. 7, 1961 upper end 3 thereof for convenience. A substantially triangular base head 4 is secured transversely across the upper end 3 of the handle, the said base head being apertured as at '5 and being provided with a pair of projections 6 extending upwardly from the upper face 7 thereof, the purpose of which will hereinafter be described.
A complementary blade clamping head 8 is adapted to be received upon the base head 4, said blade clamping head being concavo-convex as clearly shown in Figure 4 and this head is apertured as at 9, these apertures being adapted to engage over the projection 6 when the head is in the blade clamping position shown in Figure 2.
A stem or shank 10 is secured to the underside of the blade clamping head 8 and extends downwardly therefrom substantially at right angles to the head, said shank being adapted to pass through the aperture 5 in the base head 4 and to enter the hollow handle 1 as clearly shown in Figure 1. An elongated slot 11 is formed through the lower end 12 of the .shank and this permits the selective detachment of the blade clamping head 8 to the base head4, it being understood that a triangular blade (not illustrated) sharpened on both edges, is adapted 'to be clamped between the two heads with the cutting edges exposed along the longitudinal edges 13 of the Means are provided to permit the selective detachment of one head from the other, said means taking the form of a handle or lever 14 pivoted intermediate the ends thereof between a pair of lugs 15 formed on the side wall 16 of the hollow handle 1 by means of pivot pin 17. The inner end of the lever 14 is provide-d with a finger 18 adapted'to engage within the for'ementioned slot 11 in the stem 10.
The outer end 19 of the lever 14 is curved as shown in Figure 1 and is thereby adapted to nest against the side 16 of the handle when in the blade clamping position shown in Figure 2. In this connection the broad end 20 of the blade clamping head 8 is recessed as at 21 and a complementary recess (not illustrated) is formed in the same end of the base head 4, so that the curved portion 22 of the lever 14 nests within this recess when in the clamping position shown in Figure 2.
It will be seen from the foregoing that when the lever is in the position shown in Figure 1, the blade clamping head 8 can be removed and replaced freely and that when the blade clamping head is in the position shown in Figure 1, the lever can be moved in the direction of arrow 23, thus causing the finger 18 to engage the slot 11 and draw the blade clamping head downwardly upon the base head, the projection 6 entering the apertures 9 and maintaining the alignment required.
This action is assisted by means of the assembly collectively designated 24 and contained within the hollow handle 1. Also formed upon the inner end of the lever 14 is a cam 25 and a hollow carrier 26 is secured within the hollow handle 1 by means of a screw plug 27 in the lower end 2 of the handle. This carrier contains a resilient spring 28, a lower ball bearing 2? resting upon a transverse pin 30, and an upper ball bearing 31. The wall of the carrier is slotted as at 32 to permit the inner end of the lever 14 to enter within the carrier and the upper ball bearing 31 rests against the cam 25. With. the lever in the position shown in Figure 1, the cam 25 compresses the spring 28 so that when the lever is moved in the direction of arrow 23, the spring 28, reacting between the carrier and the cam, snaps the lever into position and maintains same in the closed position thus clamping the head 8 firmly upon head 4.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the blades are readily changeable and that the razor can be washed easily after use.
Since various modifications can be made in the invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claim without departing from such spirit and scope,- it is intended thatall matter. con,- tained' in the accompanying specification shall beinterpreted as illustrative only and not in a limitingsense.
What is claimed as the invention is: V
A razor comprising in combination a substantially hollow handle, a centrally apertured base head secured transversely across the upper end of said handle, a blade clamping head complementary to said base head and being detachably mated therewith, a stern secured tothe underside of said clamping head and extending downwardly therefrom, said stem adapted to enter said hollow handle, an elongated slot formed through said stem adjacent the lower end thereof, means on said handle cooperating with said stem adapted to clamp said clamping head onto said base head and to release said clamping head from said base head selectively whereby said clamping head can be removed from said base head, said means comprising a lever pivotally connected intermediate the ends thereof to one side of said handle, the outer end of said lever being curved to nest underneath said base head when in the head clamping position, a finger formed adjacent the inner end of said lever selectively engageable within said slot in said stem, a cam formed on the inner end of said'lever below said finger, the inner side of said cam engaging the lower endof said stem, a hollow carrier detachably secured within said handle below said lever, a resilient spring in said carrier, ball means also in said carrier above said spring, said ball means engaging the outer side of said cam, said spring reacting between the base of said handle and said ball, said spring, said ball, and said cam cooperating together to provide an over center snap action to said lever whereby said stem is urged upwardly free of said finger in one position ofsaid lever, and-urged downwardly into head clamping position in the other position of said lever.
