Q STATES Unite WALTER STRANDERS, OF NEW' YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD I. HORSMAN, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,308, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed January 26, 1884.
I ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER SrRANDERs, a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Building-Blocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my t improved building blocks, showing them boxed up. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same, showing them fitted together to form a tower. Fig. 3 is a top view of one of the horizontal partitions which constitute portions of my building-blocks. Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the posts that are used as such building-blocks. Fig. 5 is. an end view of the post.
This invention relates to an improved con- 2o struction of posts and horizontal partitions and receiving-box for constitutinga system of building-blocks; and it consists of the new combination ofparts that is hereinafter more fully described. I
The building-blocks are composed of horizontal partitions A A, of vertical posts B B and B and of the receiving-box C. The box 0 may be made of wood or any other material, and has a suitable lid, a. One face of the box o or of the lid has in it horizontal grooves 12, which are indicated in Fig. 1, and which cross each other at right angles and extend to the edges of the box, in the same manner as is indicated in Fig. 3. The same face of the box 5 which has the grooves 12 has also one or more sockets, d. The parts which constitute the building material can all be packed into this box, as is indicated in Fig. 1.
When the blocks are to be built up into a tower or other structure, the box is first emptied and so placed that the face which has the grooves Z) and the socket d is at the top, as appears from Fig. 2 of the drawings. Then the post B", which has a tenon, e, at its lower end, 5 has this tenon inserted in the socket d, and is thereby held upright on the box 0.
The horizontal partitions or boards A A are (No model.)
perforated in one or more places, as is indicated at f in the drawings, so that they can be slipped upon tenons that are formed at the 0 upper ends of the several posts. These tenone are shown at g in the drawings.
When the post B has been fitted upon the box 0, a board, A, is slipped upon its tenon g, and it will be seen that said tenon then projects a certain distance above the board A.
A post, B, is then placed on this tenon of the post Bthat is to say, each post B has asocket, h, in its lower end for the reception of that portion of the tenon g of the post below it which projects above the face of the board A. In this manner the posts and the boards A can be superposed ad tnfim'tum, and, finally, a suitable spike or finishing-piece, D, may be placed on the top of the structure.
The grooves b b in the face of the box and the corresponding grooves, i z, in the boards A serve to receive upright pieces E of pasteboard or other substance, which constitute the walls of the tower or structure to be represented. The box 0, constitutinga means of supporting the other building-blocks,assists materially in the formation ofasolid foundation and pedestal, and adds therefore to the utility of the invention.
I claim nothing that is shown in Letters Patent Nos. 144,124, 256,191, and 278,224.
I claim- 1. The combination of the box 0, having one or more sockets, d, with the post B hav- 8o ing tenons e and g, and with the posts B B, having sockets h and tenons g, and with the perforated and grooved boards A A, substan tially as herein shown and described.
2. The box C, combined with the posts B and B, the boards A A, and the upright strips or sheets E E, the boards A and the face of the box 0 being grooved to receive said upright strips or sheets, substantially as herein shown and described.
