Claims priority, application Netherlands June 17, 1957 8 Claims. (Cl. 198-33) The invention relates to an improvement of a device for inserting match splints in conveyor or intermediate te f and in the course of this transport the match splints drop into the spaces between the partitions.
In order to obtain a still more uniform distribution of the match splints in the container it is possible, according to the invention, to provide in the container over the distributing means at least one distributing plate equipped with a vibrating device. The magnitude of the amplitude as well as the magnitude of the frequency means provided with a plurality of holes for receiving match splints, said device comprising a match splint container having a plurality of partitions extending in longi-' tudinal and transverse direction between which spaces are formed in which the match splints assume a position substantially parallel to the partitions, the match splints being transferred from said container to the holes of the conveyor or intermediate means, said container being rotatably mounted on a horizontal shaft and the longitudinal and transverse partitions being provided in radial and axial direction on the periphery of the container, a portion of the path of the conveyor or intermediate means to be filled being provided along part of the ro tating container as disclosed in copending application 593,263, having common ownership herewith, and aims at distributing the match splints introduced into the container as uniformly as possible along the entire width' of the container so as to cause each space between the partitions always to transfer a sufficient amount of match splints to the conveyor or intermediate means.
This is accomplished by the improvement according to the invention in that in said container there is pro vided at least one distributing means for the match splints.
This distributing means may consist of a brush, rail, wiper, rake, rubbing means, a nozzle operating'with air' under pressure etc. i It is preferred according to the invention to mount the distributing means so as to permit same to eflect an oscillating movement in the container. For this purpose' the shaft or one of the shafts on which thecontainer: rotates may be used as the oscillation axis.
A preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention is characterized in that the oscillating dis tributing means is provided with a rotating brush. 1
Apart from the fact that the distributing means provides for an adequate distribution of the match splints in the receiving spaces of the container, the additional advantage is obtained that the match splints are polished by said distributing means and, that wood fibres are re moved from the splints. Moreover, said wood fibresand dust are removed via the receiving spacesthrough" the holes of the conveyor or intermediate means and weak, thin or partly broken match splints are broken or further broken by the wiping means.
According to the invention the distributing means may be provided with a rotating part having at least one helical groove at its periphery. As a result match splints V are conveyed from the supply side towards the other side is driven by a pinion 33 and a chain 34, and which in of the distributing means may be so selected as to have a plurality of match splints thrown along one side of said distributing plate onto said distributing plate, said splints being delivered again at the other side of the distributing plate to the container. Due to the vibration of the distributing plate the match splints are distributed on the surface of said plate thus accomplishing a uniform discharge of the splints over the entire edge of the distributing plate. In case more than one distributing plate is used, these plates may have opposite inclinations.
According to the invention it is preferred to provide the delivery portion of the plate with recesses or grooyes extending in the longitudinal direction so that as it were a number of interconnected gutters are formed through which the match splints are. delivered.
The invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings showing by way of example an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a side view of said device, the side wall of the container being transparent.

both sides of the drum a guide path 4 is provided for conveyor means 6 which may for example consist, in a manner known per se, of carrier means or bars provided with holes. These guide paths 4 have been arranged in such manner that they may extend along a portion of the periphery of the container 2. The match splint carrier bars, which are driven in a manner not shown, drive the container 2. For this purpose said container is equipped at its front end with toothed wheels (not shown) engaging with recesses in the match splint carrier bars. Obviously it is also possible to drive the container 2 which in that case drives the match splint carrier bars.
The mantle of the container is formed by a plurality of wall portions or partitions 14 extending in radial and longitudinal direction. Said wall portions or partitions may be of alternating height.
In the container 2 a distributing means 26 has been mounted so as to permit same to effect an oscillating movement around the rotation axis 3 of said container. This distributing means has been provided with an arm 27 which is driven via a system of rods 28, 29 and a transmission 30 by an electro-motor 31. On the rotation axis 3 there has been provided a pinion 32 which Patented. Feh. 21, 19 61 turn drives a rotating brush 37 via a pinion 35 and a belt transmission 36.
The above-described device operates as follows:
The match splints laterally introduced into the container by a filling device (not shown) drop into the spaces formed by the wall portions or partitions 14 whilst the surplus of match splints get into the lower portions of the container. When the container is rotated anticlockwise the match splints in the lower portion of the container are taken along over a short distance and thereupon they slide downwards along the inner wall of the container. The distributing means 26 driven by the above-described driving device oscillates to and fro whilst the brush 37 rotates. As a result the match splints in the lower portion of the container are moved to and fro, thrown upwards and distributed across the entire length of the lower portion of the container..
In order to obtain a still better distribution of the match splints across the lower portion of the container 2 a distributing plate 38 is provided over the distributing means 26 in an inclined position. The ends of said distributing plate 33 are at a distance from the inner wall of the container. This distributing plate is vibrated by a vibrating apparatus 39 and comprises at its lower end a portion provided with such recesses 40 extending in the longitudinal direction of the plate 38 that a plurality of adjacent gutters are formed which deliver the match splints arriving on the distributing plate 33 as uniformly as possible to the inner wall of the container. On the one hand these match splints drop from the spaces between the wall portions or partitions 14 onto the distributing plate when said spaces have passed a suction device 41. The match splints which have been transmitted from the receiving spaces to the match splint carrier bars are sucked by said sucking device further into the holes of the said match splint carrier bars. On the other hand the distributing means 26 may move with such a wide amplitude and may be driven at such a speed that this distributing means also throws match splints onto the distributing plate.
It is obvious that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above and shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings but that it may be modified in many ways without departing from the scope of the invention. When for example a single or multiple helically-shaped brush or like means is used, said means may project beyond the match splint container so that said means also serves as a supply means.
I claim:
1. In combination with a match splint holding means provided with a plurality of holes, each of which is adapted to hold one match splint, a device for inserting match splints in the match splint holding means, said device comprising a cylindrical splint container having a rotatable circumferential wall formed with a plurality of holes through which the splints may pass, said holes of the wall being formed by a plurality of partitions extending axially and circumferentially of said container, said partitions defining separate spaces in which the match splints assume a position substantially parallel to each other and to the partitions, a guide path for the match splint holding means being arranged at least along a lower part of the outer surface of said circumferential wall of said container and in close proximity to said container, driving means for driving the match splint holding means and the container at the same speed and a distributing means for the match splints disposed in ternally of the container and including means sweepingly disposed in contact with the inner surface of the cylindrical wall beyond the bottom of said container in the direction of movement of the container for evenly distributing the match splints within the container outside of the container holes over the circumferential wall for passage through the holes into the match splint holding means.

In combination with a match splint holding means provided with a plurality of holes, each of which is adapted to hold one match splint, a device for inserting match splints into the match splint holding means, said device comprising a cylindrical splint container having a rotatable circumferential wall formed with a plurality of holes through which the splints may pass, said holes of the wall being formed by a plurality of partitions walls extending axially and circumferentially of said container, said partition walls defining separate spaces in which the match splints assume a position substantially parallel to each other and to the partition walls, a guide path for the match splint holding means arranged at least around a lower part of the circumferential wall of the container and in close proximity to the outer surface of the wall, driving means for driving the match splint holding means and the container at the same speed, means for feeding match splints into the container at one end thereof, and distributing means for the match splints provided internally of the container and arranged below the feeding means and including means in sweeping contact with the inner surface of the cylindrical wall beyond the bottom of said container in the direction of movement of the container for distributing the match splints lengthwise and crosswise of the container outside of the container holes.
3. In combination with a match splint holding means provided with a plurality of holes, each of which is adapted to hold one match splint, a device for inserting match splints to the match splint holding means, said device comprising a cylindrical splint container having a rotatable circumferential wall formed with a plurality of holes through which the splints may pass, said holes of the wall being formed by a plurality of partition Walls extending axially and circumferentially of said container, said partition walls defining separate spaces in which the match splints assume a position substantially parallel to each other and to the partition walls, a guide path for the match splint holding means arranged at least around a part of the circumferential wall of the container and in close proximity to the outer surface of the wall, driving means for driving the match splint holding means and the container at the same speed, means for feeding match splints into container at one end thereof, and a distributing means for the match splints mounted internally of the container and arranged in sweeping contact with the inner surface of the cylindrical wall for distributing the match splints lengthwise and crosswise of the wall and means mounting said distributing means for oscillatory movement.
4. The combination of claim 3, wherein said distributing means is mounted for oscillatory movement about an axis coincident with the axis of rotation of the rotatable circumferential wall of the container.
5. The combination of claim 3, wherein said distributing means includes a brush, arms supporting the brush for rotatable movement in engagement with the inner surface of the circumferential wall, said arms being mounted by said mouting means for oscillatory movement.
6. The combination of claim 5, wherein said brush is formed with a helical groove on its periphery.

In combination with a match splint holding means provided with a plurality of holes, each of which is adapted to hold one match splint, a device for inserting match splints into the match splint holding means, said device comprising a cylindrical splint container having a rotatable circumferential wall formed with a plurality of holes through which the splints may pass, said holes of the wall being formed by a plurality of partition walls extending axially and circumferentially of said container, said partition walls defining separate spaces in which the match splints assume a position substantially parallel to each other and to the partition walls, a guide path for the match splint holding means arranged at least around a part of the circumferential wall of the container and in close proximity to the outer surface of the wall, driving means for driving the match splint holding means and the container at the same speed, means for feeding match splints into the container at one end thereof, and a distributing brush for spreading the match splints along the inner surface of the circumferential wall provided internally of the container and arranged in substantial sweeping contact with the inner surface of the cylindrical wall for distributing the match splints lengthwise and crosswise of the container and a distributing plate arranged to receive the match splints as they enter the container and distribute them lengthwise of the container over the distributing brush, said distributor plate including match splint guide means for directing match splints endwise into the container holes. 15
6 8. The combination of claim 7, wherein said plate is inclined axially and has an upper surface formed with axially extending, transversely spaced grooves defining said guide means.
