Description

Jan. 17, 1961 M. SUBEN wmc: ASSEMBLY FOR WALLETS AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 9, 1959 INVENTOR. MoR TEN 5U6M HTTORNEY United States Patent 2 ,968,328 WING ASSEMBLY FOR WALLETS AND THE LIKE Morten 'Suben, Mount Vernon, N.Y., assignor to Jack Beslen, Fair Lawn, NJ.
Filed Feb. 9, 1959, Ser. No. 791,877
7 Claims. (Cl. 150-39) Still more particularly, the invention deals with a structure of the character described, wherein the device includes means for engaging and keying the body member and supporting elements to maintain relationship of the member and elements one with respect to the other.
The novel features of the invention will be best'un'derstood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged broken plan view of the central diagrammatically illustrating one of my improved coupling devices thereon.
Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side edge view of the folded portion of the wallet, diagrammatically illustrating the arrangement of the coupling device thereon and the supporting elements arranged therein; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 showing only the coupling device and omitting all background showing.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, represents, in part, the body member of a wallet, which can be of any desired construction and composed of any suitable material. Instead of a wallet, the body member may simply comprise a pass case supporting member or a leaf container of any type or kind. In the accompanying drawing, the central foldable portion of the body member is primarily illustrated and this portion is designated generally by the reference character 11 in Figs. 1 and 3, this portion having several transverse score lines, as diagrammatically seen at 12, to care for folding in a relatively thin manner or in a widespread manner, as shown for example in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the diiferent folds compensating for the capacity thickness of the product as used, particularly when cards or other articles are arranged in pocket sides of three supporting elements 13, 14 and 15, as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 3 and shown partially in section in Fig. 2 of the drawing. These elements are usually composed of transparent plastic material, so that cards or the like arranged therein are visible through both sides of each of the elements, the section through both of the sides being clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Considering Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, it will 2,968,328 Patented Jan. 17, 1961 The inturned ends 16 are spaced from the elongated bar member 18 of the device 17 to form channels, one of which is indicated at 19 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, to snugly receive side edge portions of the body member 10. The inturned ends 16 terminate in upwardly and outwardly curved tabs 20, having slightly enlarged heads 21, note Fig. 3 of the drawing. The heads 21 provide for detachable mounting of loop ends 22 of a coil spring 23, as clearly noted in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The height of the tabs 20 or location of the heads 21 is such as to dispose the coils of the spring 23 in a position to bear upon the exposed element 15 arranged upon the body member 10, in the manner diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, so as to retain apertured side portions 24 of the elements 13-15 upon key parts 25 on the bar member 18 adjacent but inwardly of the tabs 20.
The key parts 25, also pass through correspondingly alined apertures 26 in the body member 10 to thus definitely position the body member or the central foldable portion 11 thereof on the coupling device 17. The key i 25 by extending the material of the bar member upwardly or in the direction that the tabs 20 extends from the bar member.
It will be understood that, by detaching one of the loop or hook ends 22 of the spring 23 from one of the tabs, 20, the elements 13-15 can be removed for portion of a wallet or the like in open position and appear that side edges of the elements 1315 are dis- 7 clearly illustrate the parts.
any desired purpose or the number of said elements modified to include additional elements or to limit the number of elements employed. With the present construction, the use of three of the elements provides six wing portions or, in other words, exposure of twelve sides on the transparent characteristics of the supporting elements or wings.
It will appear from a consideration of Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing that the coupling device 17 or the bar stock, from which the device is formed, is substantially half-round in cross-sectional form and, thus, will produce on the outer exposed portions of the body member 10 a neat and finished appearance. However, bar members of different cross-sectional contours can be employed.
It will be understood that the showings in the accompanying drawing are very much enlarged in order to It will also be apparent that the inturned ends 16 can, if desired, be pressed in the direction of the bar 18 to positively grip the side edge portions of the body member when properly positioned or centralized on the body member but, in any event, at all times, it would be desirable to have the channel 19 snugly engage the side edge portions in order to minimize the space occupied by the device 17 at side portions of the wallet, pass case or the like.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A coupling device for a wing assembly of the character described, said device comprising an elongated bar having a flat surface and a rounded surface, inwardly turned end portions on the bar forming, at said end portions, channels, the inwardly turned portions terminating in projecting tabs, yieldable means coupled with the tabs and extending longitudinally of the bar in spaced relation thereto, and said bar, inwardly of the tabs, having key parts projecting from the flat surface of said bar.
2. A coupling device for a wing assembly of the character described, said device comprising an elongated bar having a flat surface and a rounded surface, inwardly turned end portions on the bar forming, at said end portions, channels, the inwardly turned portions terminating in projecting tabs, yieldable means coupled with the tabs and extending longitudinally of the bar in spaced relation thereto, said bar, inwardly of the tabs, having key parts projecting from the flat surface of said 'bar, said tabs flaring outwardly in the direction of the ends of the bar, and the free end portions of the tabs terminating in heads.
3. A coupling device for a wing assembly of the character described, said device comprising an elongated bar having a fiat surface and a rounded surface, inwardly turned end portions of the bar forming, at said end portions, channels, the inwardly turned portions terminating in projecting tabs, and yieldable means coupled with the tabs and extending longitudinally of the bar in spaced relation thereto.
4. A coupling device for a wing assembly of the class described, said device comprising an elongated bar having key parts projecting from one surface thereof adjacent end portions of the bar, said bar including inwardly turned end portions forming channels on said surface of the bar, said inturned end portions of the 'bar including projecting tabs, and yieldable means joining said tabs and extending over and longitudinally of said bar.
