VENTILATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,63, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, Josnrn SnLLwooD and SIMON J. HARRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Ishpeming, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Apparatus; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved ventilating apparatus, with part of the outer casing broken away. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on line as m, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 3/ 3 Fig. 2.

Our invention relates to thatclass of ventilators more particularly adapted for use in mines, 850., in which an upward draft is maintained in the main tube or shaft by introducing a current of airor steam into the upper part of the said shaft through an upwardly-bent nozzle; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a ventilating apparatus of the above-described class, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

0 represents the pure-air pipe, which opens into the main pipe, near its upper extremity, the inner end of the pure-air pipe, which extends within the inain pipe, terminating in three or more upwardly-curved air-tubes, C, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The manner in which our improved ventilating apparatus operates is as follows: When the apparatus is to be used, for instance, in a coal-mine, for the purpose of removing from pipe A is made of a sufficient length to cause its lower end to come within a short distance of the ground. The branch pipes B B, which may be of any number and of any length, are run into the various galleries and tunnels of the mine, the upper end of the main pipe, to which the pureair pipe 0 isseoured, extending up on a level with, or a short distance above, the mouth of the mine. Now, in order to cause the foul air, gas, or smoke in the several parts of the mine to pass up through the apparatus, a current or stream of air is forced by any suitable power through the pure-air pipe or eXhaustpipe 0. This air, passing through the upwardlyinclined air-tubes O, rushes out at the top of the main pipe of the apparatus, thereby drawing after it the foul air in the lower part of the main pipe and the branch pipes B B, as will-readily be understood by reference to the drawings.
'From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of our improved ventilating apparatus will readily be understood without requiring further explanation.
WVc are aware that ventilating apparatus have been heretofore constructed in which an upward draft is obtained in the main tube or shaft by introducing an upward current of air or steam into the upper part of the said shaft through an upwardlybent nozzle, and we do not therefore claim such construction, broadly; but

The ventilating apparatus herein shown and described, consisting of the main pipe A, branch pipes B B, and exhaust-pipe G, having upwardly-curved air-tubes 0, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
