J. B. SCHOGGEN.
GHURN.
Noi 296,630? Patented Apr., 8, 1884.
@i Ff N PETERS, Imnwmrwgnpber. washington D. l;
UNITED Sterns JAMES BAILEY SCHOGGEN, OF MOUNTAIN HOME, ARKANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,630, dated April 8, 1884.
Application led J annary 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom if; may concern.-
Be it known that L JAMES BAILEY Sonoc- GEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mountain Home, in the county of Baxter and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a speciication, referen ce beingv had therein to the ac-l companying drawings.
My invention relates to churns; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 'l represents a front elevation of the device, showing the dashers in dotted iines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, also showing the dashers in dotted line. Fig. 3 indicates a plan view of the milk-vessel and its cover.' The first view shown under Fig. 4 represents a cross-section through one of the side guide-plates. The second view under said figure is a crosssection through the faceplate which secures the horizontal bar that connects the cranks. Fig. 5 is a detail showing two perforated flashers at the bottom of a rod.
Similarlettersindicate similarparts throughout the several views.
The letter A represents the vessel or churn proper, and A the cover for the same.
a a are two openings in said cover.
B B are two seinicireular perforated dashers secured to the bottom of vertical rod C. The upper ends of the rods() engage the openings E of the pitman-rods F, and are secured thereto by means of set-screws D.. The two rods C F can be detached and the cpper'operative. parts disunited from the lower parts or d churn proper.
F is the top of rod F, at which point rod Gis pivoted thereto. The lower end of rod G ts over the handle-bars.
H is a crank-piece, and I a wooden handle on the handlebar.
J J are `the .face-pieces of the side guideplates for the rods F.
J are the under pieces, and J the circular opening formed by the union of plates J and J.
j j are bolts uniting the plates and securing the same to the block, which will be hereinafter described.
K and K are face-plates securing the crankshaft to the block L. Said crank-shaft works in the opening K2.
arms. lv of the stay M rest against the wall and are secured thereto by any suitable means,
The letter O indicates. the wall.
The device is operated by a person turning the cranks. The most eonvenientway is to sit immediately in front and operate the cranks by both hands. It is obvious, however, that the machine can be worked with one hand and from any accessible point, and
that power given to one crank is eommuni cated to the opposite handle, and all the parts thereby operated. This is accomplished inasmuch-as the several parts of the handle are all rigidly united and formed of a single piece.
By adding an extra dasher to each rod, I am enabled to increase the agitation of the vliquid and expedite the formation of butter.
I attach importance to the fact that the stay M is secured to the block L at one end, while its inner portion is attached to a wall of av room, or any other suitable place, where by the mechanism is held in position while in operation, and the dasher-rods C adapted to be removed from the pitman-rods F for the purpose of cleaning the churn without detaching said stay from its fastening.
I am aware that the mechanism hereinbefore described is old, and I do not claim such as myinvention; but
W'hat I do claim is- The combination of the mechanism yherein described with the block L, having the stay M, composed of the arms MMZ, for attaching the mechanism to any suitable place, whereby the churning-vessel and its dashers are adapted to be removed therefrom, as shown and described.
In testimonyl whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BAILEY SCHOGGEN.
