Description

STATS vJOH H. BEADLE, OFANEYV YORK, N. Y.
CONSTRUCTION OF BREAST-PUMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent 1\To. 29,662, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BEADLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breast-Pumps; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts. 1
lVith ordinary breast pumps a regular pump either of glass or of some other material is connected with the cup or receiver, and the piston works in the interior of the barrel, being provided with an ordinary piston rod and handle. This arrangement necessarily throws the end of the piston rod or the handle pretty far out from the inner bell shaped end of the pump, and the operation of the pump is thereby rendered unhandy and at the same time the piston rod or handle is liable to break off from the slightest accident.
To overcome these difiiculties is the object of my invention, which consists in combining the pump barrel with the glass tube leading from the cup in such a manner that said tube forms the piston rod and that by imparting a reciprocating motion to the barrel, the operation of pumping is eected.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
The receiver or cup A, with the bell shaped end B, is constructed in the ordinary manner of glass or any other suitable material. The tube C, Awhich leads from the receiver is furnished with a perforated plug a, in its end and a valve b, is inserted into this plug,
which opens outwardly. Secured on the outside of the tube C, and near to its end is the packing c and a barrel D, of brass or of any other suitable material is made to fit nicely on this packed end, so that it can easily be moved in a longitudinal direction, the packing c serving to produce a tight joint. The head d, of the barrel is provided with a valve e, which opens outwardly, and if now the bell shaped end B, is closed by placing it against the human body or in some other way, and a reciprocating motion is imparted to the barrel D, the air in the receiver or cup A, is rareied and the desired effect is produced. The stroke of the barrel D may be very short and the length of the tube C, together with the barrel may be reduced so much that the whole device is not over a few inches long, and still by the comparatively large diameter of the piston a powerful effect is produced, and the pump is easily operated by the person who intends to apply it to his or her body without being obliged to reach the hand out to an inconvenient distance.
This pump can be constructed at a triling expense, and all its parts are so constructed that they are not liable to get out of order or break. It is more convenient to carry than ordinary pumps for the same purpose and the ease with which it is operated is unsurpassed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I Claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A breast pump having in combination the reciprocating barrel D, tube C, packing c, and valves b and e, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
