CAR-COUPLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,590, dated April 8, 1884:.

To all whom 236 may concern: I

Be it known that I, SIDNEY LYONS, a citizen ton, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CanCo'uplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2is a side view of the ends of two cars provided with the coupling, showing them coupled; and Fig. 3 is a similar View of one of the draw-heads with thelink raised.

My invention has relation to that class of car-couplings in which links hinged upon the draw-heads are caught by hook-shaped proconsists in theimproved construction and combination of parts of such a coupling, in which the link may be raised and supported at different heights for the purpose of coupling with cars of diii'erent height, or for the purpose of raising the link out of engagement with the hook of another drawhead, as hereinafter In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a drawhead, the upper side of the front end of which is beveled, and forms a hook or shoulder, B, adapted to engage the hinged link G of the opposite draw-head. This link is hinged at the inner end of the draw-h cad, immediately below the lower edge of the car, being secured upon a shaft, D, turning in a transverse perforation, E, in the draw-head, and provided at one end with an arm, F, to the outer end of which a rod, G, is I hinged, the upper end of which is again hinged to alever, H, pivoted upon the roof of the car. The drawhead has a number of transverse perforations, I, near its lower side, into which perforations a pin, J, fits, which pin may be adjusted in one of the perforations, raising or lowering the outer end of the link as it'(the pin) is moved farther in or out in the row of perforations. When it is desired that the link upon one draw-head shall not engage the hook or horn upon the opposite draw-head, the pin is inserted into the inner most perforation, which raises the link almost vertically, while by adjusting the pin in one of the perforations near 'the end of the drawhead the link will only be raised sufficiently to enable it to reach up toward the inclined upper beveled side of the draw-head, if the same is higher than the draw-head having the link. 1

It will be seen that bytilting the lever on the top of the car the link is raised, uncoupling the same, while the beveled forward end of the upper side of the draw-head will guide the link to engage the hook in coupling.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of a draw-head forming a hook or horn upon its upper side, and having a series of transverse perforations near its under side, a pin fitting into the said perforations, and a link hinged at the inner end of the draw-head, having means for raising its outer end and resting upon the ends of the pin, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
