EARNEST KRAUSE, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
LIFT OR ELEVATOR.
SPECIEICATION forming, part of Letters Patent No. 296,582, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed February 2'1, 1384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Eiinnnsr Kai-toss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifts or Elevators; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much of the operating mechanism of a lifter or elevator as is necessary to illustrate my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section, on an enlarged scale, through shaft H and the sliding sleeve G on line a: (I? in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to vertical railways, or so-called lifts or elevators, and is applicable more especially to elevators used in warehouses and freight-depots for transporting merchandise from or to the several stories.
My improvement consists in the construction of the operating .mechanism/ as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, whereby the mechanism may be regulated or adjusted to run fast or slow, according to the 7 weight of the load to be carried, it being adjusted to run slow, but with great power, when heavy loads are to be lifted, but to run fast, but with lesser power, when lighter loads are to be lifted.
In the accompanying drawings, a a denote two of the standards of the elevator-well or frame, having boxes I; b, in which the shaft L is journaled, and boxes 0 c, in which shaft H is journaled. Fastened at opposite sides of the upper shaft, L, are grooved wheels or pulleys A A, over which the rope is carried that raises the platform on oneside and its balance-weight or counterpoise on the other. Upon shaft L are also fastened the large cog-wheel D and a smaller cog-wheel, E. The lower shaft, H, is constructed with a spline, it, and upon it slides a sleeve, G, which is recessed or grooved to fit over the spline h, so that when shaft H is rotated sleeve G will turn with it. Upon sleeve G, which is free to slide forward and back upon shaft H, is fastened the pinion 0, adapted to gear with or intermesh with the large cog-wheel D and a cog-wheel, F, which is adapted to gear or interinesh with cog-wheel E upon shaft L. At one end shaft G is out to form the worm or spiral G, which meshes with the worm-wheel M, fixed upon a shaft, P, which has its hearings in the box (2 on one of the frame-pieces a, and box 6 at the lower end of the hanger R. Upon the outer end of shaft 1 is fastened the sheave or pulley K, around which a rope, N, passes, reaching down to. the ground floor or to the basement of the building in which the elevator is located. Upon one end of shaft H is fastened the drum or pulley B, around which the hoisting-rope 0 passes, by means of which the platform is hoisted up or down.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of this mechanism will readily be understood. When the several parts are in their relative position shown in the drawings-t. a, the pinion 0 meshing with the large cog-wheel Dthe platform will move slowly up or down, but will carry avery heavy load, on account of the leverage between pinion G and thelarge wheel D. If, however, smaller loads are to be lifted, the sheave K is rotated by pulling on the endless rope N, which rotates shaft 1? and the worm-wheel M, thereby sliding sleeve Gupon shaft H in the direction of the arrow until cogwheel F gears with cog-wheel E on shaft L, at the same time disengaging the pinion C from cog-wheel D; \Vhen the parts are in this position, shaft L will be rotated considerably faster, thus raising the load placed upon the platform in much less time, but with a propon tionately decreased leverage. If desired, shaft H may be provided with a collar or stop, a, which will stop further motion of the sliding sleeve G when the wheels E and F have been brought into the proper position to gear or interinesh with each other.
attached, and the gear-wheels D and E, of clif- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ferent diameters, shaft H, having spline h, and my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature pulley B, carrying the hoisting-rope which opin presence of two witnesses.
