Be it known that I, HENRY GULL, a citizen of the United States,and a resident ofthe city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting and Distributing Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description" of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification. This invention constitutes a division vof my copending application for patent for material elevators,v filed October 20th, 1913, Serial No. 796,140. x V 1 The erection of modern buildings progress'es very rapidly, and it is essential that the means of hoisting and distributing'the building material be capable'of extenslon with the increase in height of the building, so that the workmen are not inconvenienced,
the point of use at the various different floors of the building. Furthermore this mechanism displaces to a large extent the inefficient cage or material elevator, as well as the well known derrick boom construction, which is not only unwieldy, but dangerous. V
This invention has for its object the constructionof an elevating device and distributing mechanism whereby the materials used or required for the construction of a building are elevated in wagon or truck loads from the street to the floor where required, and then delivered by means of the distributing mechanism to any point desired, the hoisting and distributing mecha= nisms being connected with the same source of power.
It is also an objectof this invention to afford a construction wherein a load is elevated in close proximity with the building and prevented from swinging to any extent and is capable of being swung into the building structure at any "floor for movement by a distributing mechanism to a point desired. 1 7
It is furthermore an' object of this invention to afford a construction embracing a sectional upright frame for the hoisting mechanismwhich may be built up from floor to floor with the vprogress of erection Serial No. 23,088. J
of the building, and with driving mechanisms built upv fromfloor to floor for the distributing means on each floor maintained in operation or not, as desired, until the building is entirely completed. I
It is finallyan object of this invention to afford in connection with a hoisting device means for delivering the load where required on any floor of the building structure and to utilize the same source of. power in the movement of the load upon the floor as in the hoisting of the load thereto. The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown .in the frame'of structural steel or other material comprising suitable horizontal floor members, beams, or joists 1, and uprights or drawings A building posts 2, constructed as usual, or in any suitable manner, is shown in a state of par tial completion.
Secured at the outer side of one of theuprights or posts 2, at any convenient position to permit delivery of ma-- terial at the bottom thereof, is an upright guide-way 3, for an elevator or crane. This, as shown, comprises a column, preferably constructed of structural steel, rectangular in cross-section, and of considerable width as compared with :its depth, having recessed in the outer surface thereof upwardly fac- .ing ratchet teeth 4. Said upright column .or guide-way is spaced outwardly from the is engaged on each side of a central column 2, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, inclined upwardly to the upper end of the upper section of the ratchet guideway 3, and is rigidly bolted thereto and projects beyond the same as shown in Fig. l, and carries at its outer end a hoisting sheave 8. Mounted to slide on said ratchet guide-way is a frame 9, which may be constructed of cast steel or any suitable material recessed on its rear side to a depth to receive the guide-way 3, therein, and engaged on the rear side thereof and overlapping the rear surface of said guide-way are plates 10, which confine said frame 9, to said ratchet guide-way, but permit the same to slide freely thereon. Integrally connected to the frame 9, at the upper end thereof, and extending outwardly above the same and in the same plane therewith,
is a crank arm 11, the upper end of which is turned outwardly and'extends for some distance from. said frame, and is provided with a plurality of apertures at different distances from said frame to enable a hoisting cable 12, to be suitably connected thereto approximately in line with the center of gravity of the mass to be hoisted. On the outer face of said frame 9, and integrally connected therewith are sleeves 13, positioned near the top of said frame and at each side thereof, and with the axes of the sleeves extending vertically, and directly beneath each of said sleeves and also integral with the frame, are socket members 1 f. Rotatably mounted in said sleeves and in the socket members provided, are cylindric shafts 15, which are provided on their upper ends with integral upwardly and outwardly extending crane arms 16, having a plurality of apertures therein.
A pawl 17 is pivoted in the lower end of the frame 9, and is provided with a weight 18, which normally impels said pawl into engagement with the ratchet teeth 4, of the guide-way. A lever 19, is connected to the pawl 17, and is pivoted with a cable 20, which is led upwardly on the frame 9, to permit the pawl to be retracted when it is desired to lower the device. Mounted at the ground level of the building is an engine 21., connected to drive a hoist winch 22 and trained about said hoist winch is the cable 12, which, as before described, is trained through the sheave at the upper end of the beam 6. The winch shaft is adapted to drive a horizontal shaft 23, mounted in suitable bearings with a clutch 24, pivoted for disconnecting the drive between the shaft 23, and the winch shaft when desired. The end of the horizontal shaft 23, is adjacent a corner column 2, being supported in a detachable bearing bracket 2 1 connected on said column, and journaled vertically beside said corner column in suitable bearings isv asectional shaft 25, which, at its lower end,
is provided with a bevel gear 26, meshing with a bevel gear 27, secured on the end of the horizontal shaft 23. The sections of the shaft 25, are approximately of floor height in length, and at the point of junction of the respective sections, are provided with winding drums 28.
Snatch blocks 29, are attached wherever required. on the various columns 2, at different floors of the building, and a line or cable 30, is trained therethrough and looped around a winding drum '28, to be utilized as a power means for shifting a load on the different floors of the building. F or this purpose a. portable track 31, consisting of relatively short sections, may be laid upon the flower if desired, or over a false floor, which is sometimes constructed during the progress of erection of a building, and a truck may be provided to roll on said track and receive the load thereon elevated from the ground by the elevating mechanism. It is not essential, however, that a track and truck be provided, as the load may be deposited upon suitable rollers 32, such as shown in Fig. 2, and hauled bythe cable to the point desired. 7
The building material is delivered, as usual, in loads at the foot of the ratchet guideway, and the operator, by pulling upon the line 20, trips the pawl and permits the frame to be lowered conveniently to the load. The entire wagon body, which is denoted by the reference numeral 32, is elevated from the vehicle frame, suitable cables being passed around the body and connected to an equalizing bar 34, depending from one of the crane arms 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Inasmuch as there are two crane arms, one thereof may be equipped with a suitable chain or tackle 35, for engagement with objects which may not be conveniently hoisted by means of the equalizing bar.
The power is applied to the hoisting arm 11, which is integral with the frame, through the medium of the cable 12, and the point ofattachment of said cable on said hoisting arm being at any of the apertures in the length thereof, and depending upon the v point of attachment of the equalizing bar or cable which supports the load on the crane arm, enables the point of attachment of the cable to be substantially in line with the center of gravity of the load to be lifted. The crane arm may be held from swinging if desired during a hoisting operation, by a turn of cable or line thrown around the hoisting arm and crane arm, which may be quickly released when the load has reached the desired elevation. As the load is elevated by the crane 9, the pawl 17, clicks over the ratchet teeth in the guide-way in position to instantly support the frame and load in case of accident or failure of the cable 12, or the operating mechanism there- I for. 3. After depositing the load upon the floor of the building the hoisting crane may be returned for re-loading by tripping the pawl 17. When the guide-way frame is extended for the next upper floor it-is only necessary to build on an additional section and to shift the hoisting beam upwardly to engage ceeding floor, and this extension can be effected without material delay or interference with the use of the device. Likewise a section of the shaft 25, may be inserted'in building under construction comprising theplace as the floors are built up.
I have onlyshown a distributing mechanism connected for use on the upper floor of the building, but it is obvious that any number of such mechanisms may be used simultaneouslyon each floor of the building.
Of course it is to be understood that I have only shown a preferred form of my invention, although the invention is obviously capable of numerous variations and modifications from the particular and preferred embodiment illustrated and described herein. I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: 7

In a device of the class described a power driven winch for a hoisting machine, a vertically movable frame operated thereby to elevate its load thereon, a vertical shaft operated from a suitablesource of power with the winch, drums thereon at intervals in the length thereof adapted to receive a cable therearound whereby a load elevated by the hoist may be delivered by said cable from the hoist.
