CHURN-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296.512, dated April 8, 1884.

.To all whom .it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jarras A.. Bears, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident of lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of Athe invention, which will enable others skilled IO in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accomY panying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved churn-motor; and Fig. 2 is aside elevation of 'the motor mechanism, one of the sides of the frame having been removed.

My invention has relation to mechanical powers for operating churns of that class which are actuated by a spring or weight; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A isthe frame or casing which contains the operating mechanism. B is the main shaft, which is boxed in the sides ofthe frame. C is the actnoting-spring, andD is the main wheel. In-
stead oi' the spring C, which is wound by a key or crank placed upon the squared outer end of the main shaft B, I may use one or more weights with cords wouudaround drums or pulleys upon the main shaft, if desired; or
a clock mechanism of any desired construction may be used for rotating the main shaft B and drive-wheel D. The latter gears with a pinion, E, Xed upon a shaft, F, in the top O part of the frame. Upon the shaft F is lalso keyed the star-wheel G, which, in the present illustration of my invention, has six radial arms or spokes, g. H is another shaft, which is fixed in a frame, and upon which is hung 5 abifurcatedlever composed of the two arms I and J, the upper arm, I, having a box, c', through which'shaft His inserted. This arm also has a pin or stud, K, for the attachment of one end of a spring, L, the other. end of which is fastened in an eyebolt, M, inserted through the Vcrosspiece N of the frame, in which it may be adjusted, so as-to regulate the tension of the spring, by means of a nut,
0, or equivalent means. The lower arm of the bifurcated lever is bent, as shown in the drawings, and provided at its free end with a friction-roller, l?. To the outer end of the lever is attached the staif Q of the reciprocating dasher, which works in the churn It, and which said dasher may be of any desired con struction suited for the purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my motor will readily be understood without requiring extended explanation. It will be seen that as the star-wheel G revolves in the direction of the arrow its arms will strike the under side of the upper arm ofthe bifurcated lever, and thus tilt the saine upon its shaft H. At the moment when arm g is released from the lever the friction-rollerat the outer end of the curved arm J will be in such position as to bear against one of the other arms of the star-wheel, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and as the wheel revolves this arm, bearing against the roller, will force the bifurcated lever in a downward direction, and thereby bring its straight upper arm in the proper position for receiving the stroke of the arm g next in front of it. Thus it will be seen that there will be a short stop or intermission between each stroke of the lever, whereby I imitate the np-anddown motion of the dasherstatt', as this would be operated in churningv by hand in the usual manner. The spring L serves the double purpose of cushioning the strokes of the lever and also of properly adjusting the bifurcated inner ends of the same, so as to be in the correct position for being actuated by the star-wheel in the manner described.
\ Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a mechanical motor for churns, the combination of the' actuating mechanism, shaft F, having pinion E, star-wheel G, bifurcated lever I J, having box i, pin K, and frictionroller l?, shaft II, and adjustable spring L, substantially as set forth.
