THOMAS R. GIBSON, OF FREMONT, EBRASKA.
POWER MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,127, dated June 6, 1882. Applica-tion med April 13, 1832. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. GiEsoN, of Fremont, Dodge county, Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement' in Power Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to mechanism in which a train of wheels is driven by a weight; and it consists in the combination therewith of a governingdevice having the object to obtain steady. and uniform power for use in pumping water, grinding grain, and .for other purposes where a limited power is required. The construction and operation are .set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved mechanism, and Fig. 2 is afplan view of the same.
Upon a suitable frame, A, isa train of gearwheels, B G D E F G, on shafts a, b, c, and d. 0n shaft a of the primary wheel B is a drum, e, to which is connected a rope, f, thatv passes over a pulley and carries a weight, g, on its end. The weight may be of any suitable character, and by its descent serves to drive the gearingand revolve the shaft d at the end of the train,fro1n which the power is to be taken.
h is a drum on shaft c, provided with a rope, t', that is for use in winding up the ropef and raising the weight g, horse or other power being used, for that purpose.
H is a governor of the centrifugal type, the stem lc of which is connected to the outer end of a lever, l, that is hung on a fixed support. The lever lis placed above a brake-wheel, m, Xed on the shaft c, so as to bear on the rim of the wheel when brought down by the rise of the governor-balls. The governor is operated by a belt, n, from a pulley, o, on shaft d, and lever lis balanced byaweight, p,attached on its outer end.
In operation, the weight being raised, the train of gearing is set in motion, and the brakelever bearing with more or less pressure on the wheel 'm the speed of shaft d is kept uniform. Increase of speed acts to raise the governor-balls and increase the pressure of the brake-lever upon the wheel m, while, on the other hand, it the speed is checked and falls below the normal point the reverse action takes place.
I do not limit myself to any size, number, or special arrangement of the wheels of train, as those details may be varied without departing from my invention.
The winding-drum h is to be providedwith clutch or ratchet connections in such manner that it may be turned backward for winding the weight without turning the power-shaftd backward. Springs may be substituted for the driving-weight, if desired.
The brake-wheel lml may be attached upon leither shaft of the train ot' wheels.
the outer end with the stem k of a governor,
H, as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS R. GIBSON.
