WILLIAM WOOD, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BRICK-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,645, dated August 14, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM lVooD, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Constructing Brick-Making Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying` drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in levers, to press down the piston rod and plate to fill the molds, with arrangements to raise up the same when the mold is filled, also a self acting arrangement for forcing out the brick mold when it is lled, &c.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, Figure l a front view of the machine; Fig. 2 a side viewgfFig. 3 a plan view showing center rod for forcing out the mold; Fig. et a side view of the same.
I construct the frame, clay box, the grinding process, piston and press plate, and other parts, in the customary manner.
I make the lever A with a cam shaped lower end, to press on the wheel in the head of the piston rod H, to force down the same and the press plate to press the clay into the mold. The upper part of the lever eX- tends suffciently high to be acted on by the arms C, in the main shaft D, when revolving, and carry the same forward till it d epresses the end to allow the arm to pass over.
The lever B, is for raising up the piston and plate after doing the duty of pressing the clay into the mold. The lower end of the lever is attached to the piston rod H, by means of a slot and a series of pins in the rod Gr, so arranged that the rod can be shifted to adjust and regulate the distance the press plate travels up and down. The
upper end of the lever B, is actuated by the arms C, in the same manner as the lever A, and receives the action, instantly, after leaving the lever A, causing the same to depress, and lift up the piston and plate as before Stated. The spring lever E, reaches up the same height as the levers A and B, to receive the action of the revolving arms C after l nected to the central slide K, reaching back to the two friction pulleys I), and the slide K, has a cross head S-topress out the brick mold when filled, the whole actuated by the lever E. Near the top of the lever E, I make a joint and attach a stiff spring T, as a preventative to damage. If there should be an obstruction to the mold coming out, by a stone or otherwise, the extra force required will cause the spring to yield and the arm will bend the lever and pass over till the cause of the obstruction is removed. The spring u is to bring back the lever E and attachments after they have discharged the mold.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l. The construction and arrangement of the spring lever E, for throwing out the mold, attached to the rock shaft F, and, actuated by the direct action of the arms C from the main shaft D, in the manner described.
2. The arrangement of the two levers A, and B, one for pressing down the piston and plate for filling the mold, and the other to lift up the same after the mold is filled, in the manner as herein described, being operated by the direct action of the arms C, from the main shaft D, as specified.
3. The adjusting arrangement of the slot, sliding ring and pins Gr, attached to the piston rod II, and lever B, to regulate the pressure of the piston and press plate, all in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
IVILLIAM WOOD.
Witnesses WM. VINE, E. FOSTER.
