UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES K. PICKLES, OF
sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD c. POPE, on SAME PLACE.
STREET-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,446, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed August 16, 1883.
ings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 an end view.
My invention relates to a roller intended more especially for use as a street-roller, but may also be used as a field-roller.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter'fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the roller, and B the frame. The frame surrounds the roller, as shown, and is supported on gud geons A, secured to the roller. It is rectangular in shape, and its front and back strips are connected by an arch, G. The arch is securely fastened to the frame by bolts .0, as shown, or by other suitable means.
I) D are brackets or ears secured to the front and back strips of the frame B near their centers, being in line or nearly in line with the arch, as shown. The brackets have three sets of holes, E E E each, one in the center and one near each corner.
Supported bythe arch, and secured thereto by apivot-bolt, F, is a swinging beam or frame, F, the point of bearing being over the center of the roiler. One end of this swinging frame may be provided with a counter-balance, G, and the other end is provided with a socket or other means for the attachment of the tongue H, and also with a socket, I, to re ceive the brackets or ears'D D; and it has holes to receive a pin, J, by which it can be made fast to either of the brackets or cars, or in either hole thereof. Now, it will be seen that when it is desired to move the roller in the other direction from which it is or has been moving it does not become necessary to No model.)
turn the roller, but merely to pull out the pin J, and the'team can be turned'without the roller, the swinging frame turning on its pivotal center, and when the socket on the frame has embraced the bracket or car on the other side of the roller it is connected therewith by the pin J, as described.
Sometimes it is more convenient not to have the team in a direct line with or right in front of the roller, as, for instance, rolling along the side of a ditch, 85c. and then it (the team) can be turned to one side or out of a direct line by connecting the swinging frame with one corner of the bracket or ear by placing the pin J in one of the holes E or E (See dotted lines, Fig. l.) I
I claim as my invention- 1. In a roller, the swinging beam or frame,
to which the tongue is secured, supported by an arch to which it is pivoted above the center of the roller, in combination with suitable means for connecting the beam to the frame of the roller, substantially as set forth.
2. In a roller, the swinging frame or beam, to which the tongue is secured, supported by an arch to which it is pivoted above the roller, in combination with the brackets secured to the frame of the roller, and having three holes each, one in the center and one in each corner, and. adapted to engage a socket on the swinging frame or beam, and to be connected there with by a suitable pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES PICKLES.
