Description

(No Modei.) J' 2 Sheet's-Sheet 2.
com.I PATTERN. l No. 296,426. Patented Apr. 18, 1884,
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
WILLIAM J. MCGARTIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COAT-PATTERN.,
SPECIFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent N o. 296,426, ated'Aprl 8, 1884.
Application filed August 16, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM J. McCAn'rIN,
of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inOoat-Patterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being ,had to the accoman fino drawings forming art of this s eci- P i s e i s P V Imation, and 1n which,-
vwhich the different cutting-lines can be ascer-` tained by exact measurement; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fuily described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the pattern, which, when in use, is placed upon the persons form, as shown in Fig. l, being held by extensions A A? of thepattern and a cord or string, B, which surround the body, `as shown. It is necessary to have the lower .edge of the pattern arranged across the body on a horizontal iine and to fit close up beneath the arm. 'My preferred way of securing the former of these objects is to provide the pattern with a liquid level, C, as shown 5 but this may be done by drawing a horizontal line across thebody by means of a square, to which the pattern would be adjusted.
A'L is the opening to it the arm under the shoulder, and A* the body of the pattern. The pattern around its outer edge is marked off into inches, the numerals being arranged as shown plainly in Fig. 2. When the pattern has thus been placed on the form, the exact distance from the point or'corner marked D to the neck of the coat is ascertained by measurement, which is added to the number of inches on the pattern when the goods are being marked for cutting. It will be plainly seen that the size (whether large or small) of the person being measured will not in any way affect the principle upon which the pattern works, for if it is placed tightly up against the arm, and the lower edge on a horizontal line drawn across thebody, (imaginary or reah) and the distance from the point D to the neck (which will be greater or less, according to the size of the person) talren, the cutting-lines will all be obtained, and that by exact measurenient.
I have represented a medium-sized person in the drawings. y
On a very large or small person the point or corner D might be a different distance from the neck than Where it is on the form represented in Fig. 1; but on account of this the principle upon which the pattern works would not in the least be changed.
When the pattern is placed on the body, a line at right angles to the lower edge of the pattern can be obtained by a plumb, as shown in Fig. l.
I claim as my invention 1. A coatpattern formed with a recess to receive an arm, a corner contiguous to the neck, and extensions to surround the body, as set forth.
2. A coat-pattern formed with a body, A, a recess to receive an arm, a corner, D, contiguous to the neck, extensions A A2 to sur-- round the body of the person, and a leveling device. v
3. A coat pattern made substantially as herein shown and described, and provided with a liquid level, as and for the purpose setv forth.
WILLIAM J. MGGARTIN.
