UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLAITER AND PU FF-FLUTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,389, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed August 27, 1883. (No model.)
Figure 1 is a top view of the plate and frame 5 Fig. 2, a transverse section on line was, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side view of the plate; Figs. 4, 5, and 6, top, end, and side views of the presser-frame; Figs. 7 and 8, top and side views of presser-roller, Fig. 9, a transverse section of the presser=roller; Fig. 10, a side view, showing the presser-frame in position.
This invention relates to a new and improved plaiter and fiuter-that is, a device which can be used for both purposes.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a rectangular base-plate, having on On this plate is placed aremovable frame, B, consisting of side pieces, I) b, and transverse parallel strips 1), which are secured to the side pieces, I) b, and have curves 1), which throw their middle portions, b out of the plane of the said side pieces, b b. This frame B is placed on the plate A, the side pieces, 5 b, resting in the rabbets c a, and the strips b passing across and above said plate A. The presser-frame O is made similar to the frame B, only with fewer transverse strips and shorter side pieces, as shown.
The presser-roller D consists of the body d, radial wings or arms at, and arbors d, which last are held by the spring-arms e of the adjustable handle E. This handle has a slit, f, in its stem F, to receive the arms 6, which are held by ferrule G and screw g. By means of the ferrule and screw the stem can be held fast, or can be opened, so as to remove the arms 6 from the arhors d By this construction the handle is adapted to different-sized rollers.
,| This device, except stem F, is made of metal,
so as to be heated.
In use the frame B is put in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the frame and plate heated. For thispurpose a cover may be used. The material is then placed over the strips 11, and is forced between the strips, either by the pressenframe O, as shown in Fig. 10, or by running the roller D lengthwise the material and frame B. The presser-frame G is designed for use with worsted goods in plaiting the I same. After the material is forced down, and thus corrugated, it is removed from theframe B, and the frame from the plate, and the corrugations are pressed down on the plate A with an iron, forming flat plaits. As many frames Care to be used as will fill the length of the frame B, and are to be left on long enough to give a set to the goods.
The roller D is for pnfling and fluting light goods. Rollers having different-sized bodies and wings or arms may be made, so as to give flutings, 850., of different widths and depths.
No claim is herein made to the presserframe 0, the right to make the same being reserved for another application.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- 1. The plate A, having the rabbet aon each side, in combination with the frame B, consisting of the side pieces, I) b, and transverse strips b, as set forth.
2. The plate A, having the rabbet a on each side, in combination with the frame B, consisting of the side pieces, b b, and transverse strips 1), said strips having the curves b and middle portions, b, the latter out of the plane of the side pieces, 12 b, as set forth.
3. The presser-roller D, consisting of the body d, radial wings d, and arbor d, in combination with the adjustable handle E, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JANE A. GLOTHER.
