.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ALFRED Hnvnnn YVOODWARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, in the county of VarWick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil, Pen, or Tooth Fick Holders; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which# Figure l represents a pencil, pen, or toothpicl; case constructed according to my iniproveincnts, with the point retracted. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, partly in section, showing the point projected. Fig. '3 is an elevation, with the outer casing in section, the point being retracted. Fig. i is an elevation, the outer casing being in section and the point projected. Figs. :5, 6, and 7 are detail views, showing the device in its various positions. Figs. S, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 15 are detail views of the various parts. Figs. 13 and 14. are sectional views of modifications.
My invention has relation to pencil, pen, or tooth-piel; cases or holders, in which the por` tion holding the lead or other Writing material, pen, or tooth-piclr can Vbe automatically projected from or withdrawn into its case or holder.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of part-s, whereby the impelling of the point or nozzle of the device is effected by pressing upon the cap at the end of the pencil, and its retraction effected by rotating the said cap.
My invention comprises, briefly, an exterior casing having at one end a sliding cap, which, being pressed down, impinges upon a movable mount, and projects the latter out through the other end of said casing, an automatic catch operating to hold the mount in its projected position during use, its retraction being effected by releasing said catch by tnrning the said cap, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the exterior casing of the pencil. B is the inovable cap, sliding within the case A, and ini-4 pinging upon the shaft C of the mount C2. 5o Csaid shaft C has a head, C, that slides Within a casing, D, which is attached to and forms part of a plug, D, at the lower end of casing A. The head C* has a pin, C, that Works in a bayonet-slot, D2 D, in the upper part of the 5 5 casing D, and is provided With a slot, G5, that i oud collar, B5, and between the collars B5 and Bo the cap B is cut out to forni a triangular slot having two inclined sides, B B, and a straight side, B. The portion of the cap B 7o bet-Ween the collars Bi B, I have called the @inipelling-tube and designated by the letter B2. The pin C upon the head of shaft C projects through the slot in the inipelling-tube, as Well as through the slot Di D3 of casing D, 75 and within the said inipellingtube, above the top of the triangular slot, is iixed a cushioned plug, G, against which the head C* strikes When the movement is retracted, thereby preventing injury to the pin C. f
The operation of my invention is as follows: Upon pressing upon the cap B the top edge, B, of the slot in said cap presses upon and forces forward the pin C down the conducting-slot D2 of the iixed conductor-tube D, and 85 on the pin C3 traveling to the bottoni thereof bears against the inclined upper edge, Bt, of the impelling-tubc Slot, and on coming opposite the inclined slot D3 turns into said inclined slot and fixes the inoveinent in position for 9o use, the cap B returning to its original position by the expansion of spring E, the pin C3 remaining at the end of the slot D3, as shown in Fig. 2. To retract the inoveinent it is only necessary to turn the cap B about a quarter- 95 revolution to the left. This forces the pin C3 out of slot D3 and into'slot D2, and the inovement returns to its original position by the eX- pansion of spring F. I would here remark thatwhen the pen or pencil is being put together the spring F is given a vtwist to the left before fastening it in position in the slot C; hence the movment G has a constant tendency to turn to the right, so-that when it reaches the bottom of the slot-D2 the torsion of the spring F will cause the spring C3 to assume the position shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
The spring E is also twisted before being placed'in position, and has the effect of turning the cap B from left to right, thereby fur-j ther assuring the locking of the movement in its projected position.
In the modification shown in Figs. 13, 14, and 15, the relative position of the parts is somewhat changed; but the principle and operation are substantially the same as in the de- Vice hereinbeforedescribed. In the said modiication the movement is composed of j two i parts, C-and D, .connected together by the spring F, the parts C carrying the locking-pin C, and the part D being fixed in the casing. The position of the spring E is also changed, it being placed within the top of cap Band resting on the conducting-tube D. The mode of operation is as before, the spring F acting by expansion and contraction, instead of byv compression and recoil.
Having fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a pencil, pen, or tooth-pick holder, the combination, with an exterior casing, and a movable cap, of a movable mount, adapted to be projected from the holder, and means, as set forth, whereby said mount is automatically locked in such projected position by depressing said cap, and to be released from such locked position by revolving the cap, substantially as described.
2. In a pencil, pen, or tooth-pick holder, the combination of an exterior casing and a movable cap, with a movable mount capable of independent movement with relation to said cap, by means substantially as set forth, and adapted to be projected from the casing and automatically locked in such projected position by depressing said cap, and a coiled spring, which will retract said mount when the cap is revolved, substantially as described.
3. In a pencil,.pen, or tooth-pick holder,
the combination of an exterior casing, a slotted ALFRED H AVI LAH WOODWARD.
