Description

(No Moniek) S REAL l MAGHINE BRAGB, I No. 296,268. Patented Apr. 1,1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
sArIUEL BEAT., or ELYRIA, OHIO, Assianoru or onEHALr To w. LAMAR-- l TINE EAr, or sAME PLAGE.
MACHINE-ERASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,268, dated April 1, 1884. Application filed December 15, 1882. Renewed November S, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BEAL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and the State of Ohio, have invented new and useful braces` for securing farm-engines, machines, and wheeled implements rmly in position, and which can also be used as a jack77 in raising the axles of implements or engines when desired, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable braces for rigidly securing all kinds of farm-engines, movable machines, and implements in one position, so they will stand firmly and securely as long as desired when operating them. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a perspective elevation of said braces as applied to the under side of the broken section of the bed of a machine, G. Fig. 2 shows asectional view of one of the sliding heads or nuts, with connecting parts.
Said braces may be used in pairs or singly.
Then used in pairs, the feet may be prevented from separating by means ofarod or othersuitable device connecting the same; or, if not so connected, they may be provided with claws to rest on a door, or, if out of doors, on a board of suitable length, provided with cleats or other mea-ns to prevent thesamc from slipping.
In the drawings similar letters refer to similar parts.
A A represent two braces, of suitable material, size, and strength to withstand any desired strain, and of such length as to stand at a proper angle, with the lower ends resting on the ground or door. Said braces may be provided with any suitable device for attachment to the heads or nuts B B at the upper ends, and with suitable claws at the lower ends, to prevent slipping on a door or wooden surface.
B B represent two heads or nuts, so contructed as to ride on proper ways, C C; also to be attached to the upper ends of the braces A A and worlr on a suitable screw, E.
G C represent suitable ways properly secured to the piece of timber J J, on which the heads B B can easily slide.
D D represent two bearings for securing and sustaining the ends of a double screw, E E.
E E represent a double screw, with the threads of its opposite ends running in opposite directions.
F represents a reversible ratchet for operating the screw E E.
J J represent a suitable piece of timber, to which the bearings D D and ways C C are secured, and which also serves as a medium of attachment of said device to any desired machine or implement.
H represents a board of suitable length, provided with cleats, on which the ends of braces A A may rest and be prevented from separating when not used on a door.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The braces are secured to the bed of a machine or implement by the piece of timber J J. The ratchet F is so operated as to draw the heads B B near together. The outer or lower ends of the braces A A are dropped onto the door or board H, and by means of claws or other device prevented froniseparat ing. The ratchet F is then operated so as to separate the heads B B, which, sliding on the ways C C, will increase the angle of the braces A A, and thereby strongly brace the machine or implement from opposite directions, at the same time holding the same securely and firmly in position. The implement or Inachine can easily be released by reversing the operations of saidratchet. v
If not desired to use both braces at the same time, one can be raised and fastened to the bed of the machine or implement and the other operated independently.
What I ,desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. The combination of the braces A A, heads B B, and screw E E, the whole to be constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. The combination of the braces A A, heads BB, ways G C, bearings D D, screw E E, and ratchet F, the whole to be constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
SAMUEL BEAL.
