FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,237, dated April l, 1884.
Application filed January 10, 1884. (No model.)
To @Zi whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, TRUE J. SMITH, a citiveen of the United States, and a resident of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specication, and in which Figure l is-a perspective view of my iinproved fencepost. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View ofthe saine, and Fig. 3 is acrosssection through line a: a: in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in\ all the figures.
My invention has relation to metallic fenceposts; and it consists in the improved construction of a post of that class, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Ais apiece of'bar-iron, of suitable dimensions, which is doubled upon itself so as to form a loop or eye, B, at the upper end. One ofthe doubled parts or legs A' of the post is then twisted at right angles, as shown 'at C, and brought up against the other dat part or leg, A, to which it is connected by pieces of wire D, the free ends of which are twisted around the .fencewires E, as shown at F, to form tyers or binders for the saine. Thus it will be seen that these twisted wires D F serve the double purpose of connecting the two parts or pieces A and A and of fastening the fence-wires to the post, the binders being inserted through holes G bored or punched through the part A. The
lower end of the leg A is twisted at right angles at H, so as to be in a plane with the leg C of part A, and these two legs C andH are ground up tothe point where the legs C and H diverge, or the divergin g point may be where the bottom fence-wire, E, is fastened to the post. The uppermost binding-wire is inserted through the loop B in the top of the post, and twisted around the uppermost fencewire on opposite sides, as shown in the drawings.
Iain aware that metallic fenceposts have been heretofore constructed consisting of asingle piece of suitable metal nent at right angles upon itself, having its lower diverging ends connected by a suitable brace and provided with wire ties, which serve the double purposeof connecting the two parts of the post together and of fastening the fence-wires to the post, and I do not therefore claim such construction, broadly; but
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent of the United States,
.my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TRUE J. SMITH.
