PATENT F E 1GB;
NATHANIEL B. SHELDON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,233, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed October 20, 1883. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL l3. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of N cw York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refcrence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of inventions known as automatic car-couplings, the object of my invention being to provide a coupler which shall be readily coupled and uncoupled without danger to the operator, which shall be strong and durable in practice, and effective and efficient in operation; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
, Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is a front view of a car provided with my improved coupler and means for uncoupling the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 8 is a plan view with the top plate removed, and Figs. 4., 5, and 6 are details.
In carrying out my invention I employ two side plates, A, to the top and bottom of which are secured the plates 13 Bby suitable screws or bolts. The plates A are provided with grooves a, into which the rear plate,'c, is placed, and secured by screws or bolts which pass through the side plate, A, and into or through said end plate, which are also provided with longitudinal grooves in line with grooves (6*, made in a rib which extends inwardly from each of the sides of the plates A. Into the grooves of said end plate, a, are inserted the rear ends of the spring-plates, the ends of said spring-plates having bearings in the grooves a. At the rear of the draw-head in the plate a is an aperture, which passes a spring-bolt, the rear end of which fits in an aperturc c, in the block 0, the forward end of which serves as a bearing for an end of a spring, 0, the opposite end acting upon a collar. The forward end of said bolt or bar E has transverse grooves c, as shown. To the upper end of the grooved bar is secured a plate, D, which is bifurcated at its forward back until the slide D passes from under the pin D, permitting the latter to drop.
It will be understood that the spring-plates will yield if acted upon bya link which stands obliquely to the longitudinal axes of the buffers.
Anywell-known means for raising the coupling-pin may be employed. I prefer, however, the one shown, in which a pin can be raised from the top or either side of a car.
I am aware that aseries of plates have been placed in a draw-head, the inner ends being separated by rubber blocks.
I am aware that changes in the form and construction of parts herein described can be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my inventio1l-- as, for instance, the number of spring-plates can be changed, the sliding plate not bifurcated, &c. I would therefore have it under stood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is- 1. A draw-head having the side pieces, A, provided with grooves a a in combination with the end piece, a, fitted in the groove a, and spring-plates b, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A series of spring-plates, 11, having slots for the passage of the coupling-pin, and rigidly secured to the end plates, c, and having their edges bearing in grooves which pass spring-plates with the bar E, having a sliding piece at its upper end, and a series of trans- 10 verse grooves, a, arranged centrally between said plates, spring-bolt c, eoupling-pin, and means for raising the latter, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
NATHANIEL B. SHELDON.
