SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,195, dated April 1, 188%.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Lmrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Constantine, in the county of bit. Joseph, State of 5 Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hay and Grain Racks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a top or plan View of a rack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation,partly sectional, in line as a), Fig. 1'. Fig.

3 is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section in line y 9 Fig. 3.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in the several figures. v My invention consists of braces of spreading form. for strengthening the side rails of a rack.

It further consists of the body of the rack having a tightand closely-fitted bottom, the

, same being readily removable.

It also consists of means for elevating the front end of the rack above the front wheels of the wagon, and likewise preventing the rack from slipping to either side on the front bolster of the wagon, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

It also consists of certain other details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and definitely claimed.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of the rack, the same consisting of the parallel longitudinallyextending pieces B B, top cross-pieces, O, and bottom cross-piece, D. The outer pieces, B, are connected with posts E, which rest on and are connected with the bottom cross-pieces, D, and the inner pieces, B, are connected with posts E, which also rest on and are connected with said cross pieces D. F represents a body which occupies the center of the frame between the pieces B, and rests on the cross-pieces D, said body consisting of side pieces, a, a bottom piece, I), and end gates or pieces, a, said side pieces resting on the bottom piece, I), and having shoulders orrecesses d on its upper edges at front and rear, to permit the attachment of blocks G, which form bearings for the end guards, H, of

posts E, and bolted thereto.

Vent Vertical and longitudinal displacement of said pieces, owing to the engagement of the same with the blocks G, and thus the body is held firmly in position, it being seen that said body is tight on all sides and closely fitted in position, whereby escape of the contents of the same is prevented.

The bottom 5 may be drawn out-at either end, and this permits the side pieces to drop, clear the blocks G, and be readily removed.

In order to stiffen and strengthen the sides of the frame, I employ braces J, which, formed of sheet metal, are bent into V form or spread, the bent end corresponding to the angle being inserted between the pieces orbars B and The outer ends of the upper limbs of the braces are inserted between the pieces or bars B and posts E, and the lowerlimbs are inserted between the posts E and lower cross-bars, D, both upper and lower ends of each brace, the piece or bar 13, posts E, and lower crossbars, D, being bolted through. By this construction the sides of the rack are stiffened and strengthened in a superior manner without greatly increasing the weight thereof.

The cross piece or bar I) at the front of the rack is shorter than the other pieces or bars, D, and has the front end of the reach K bolted to it, said reach being of spreading or flanging form, but may be of different construction.

In the rear of the bar D is a transverse bar, L, which, parallel with said bar D, is secured to the upper side of the reach, and has connected with its ends short horizontally-extend ing pieces or bars M, which extend parallel with the front end of the reach, and are bolted or screwed to the bar D, it being noticed that the under side of the bars M are flush with the under side of the reach and rest on the front 50 the rack, said guards H being pivoted to said bolster, the bars M thus being on opposite ICO sides of the reach and providing a broad bearing, so that the rack is prevented from sliding to the side of the bolster, and its elevation is such that the front Wheels readily turn Without touching the rack.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v l. The combination, with the frame of a rack, of metallic braces J, of spreading form,

the bends or angles and ends of the limbs thereof being firmly connected with said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. A rack having a body formed of a loose bottom and loose side pieces, the same being fitted centrally in the frameof the rack, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
