WILLIAM HENRY IBELLE, OF BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT J. VANCE, OF SAME PLACE.
BARREL LIFTER AND CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,010, dated April 1, 1884-.
Application filed February 4, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. IBELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Lifters and l 1 IO my invention is to produce a barrel-lifter which as folded for transportation.
Carriers, of which the following is a specifica- 1 tion.
My invention relates to improvements in barrel lifters and carriers; and the object of will be convenient, simple in construction, and one which can be readily folded for transportation. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved barrel-lifter as applied to an ordinary barrel for lifting and moving the same. Fig.2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a View of my barrel-lifter Fig. 5 is a plan view of device as constructed for application uponhalf-barrels, kegs, &c.
My device is principally designed for grocers use in carrying barrels and analogous articles; but it is evident that it may be used for carrying boxes or any other article that it will readily hold.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of my barrel-lifter, having secured thereto swinging hooks or grapples a and a, i which, when in use, engage with the chines of a barrel or edges of a box. At opposite ends of the frame are crossbars or handles b, and at one end of the frame Athe right-hand end,
as shown-is a secondary swinging handle, I).
At the middle of the frame A isa cross-bar, a, which forms the pintle of the frame-joint. I form the frame A jointed at the center, so that my lifter, when not in use, can be folded into a convenient form for transportation; and also by means of this jointed construction and the connecting cross-bar a my device acts with a better leverage upon the article to be moved or carried, and it is more conveniently *applied tliairwould otherwise be the case; but this jointed construction is immaterial to some of the features of my invention, and a good lifter can be made without the joint. I also prefer to curve the frame, as shown best in Fig. 1, for the ends of the frame thus con structed form a resting standard when the lifter is not in use and folded up, as shown in Fig. 4.. The curved ends also bring thebarrel at a greater elevation when lifted by the handles, so that the users need not be obliged to hold their hands at an inconvenient height. The secondary handle b is attached to the right-hand end of the frame A,at the ends of the handle I), by bands or straps. Said straps engage with stops 0 c on the inner side of the frame A, (indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1,) and thus to be held out of the way within the end of the frame when not in use. In constructing my lifter for use in moving half-barrels, 8nd, I shorten the relative length of the frame A, and place the handles b nearer the hooks or grapples d, as shown in Fig. 5. This will bring the handles so near each other that they can both be grasped by the hands of one person for carrying.
I secure the hooks or grapples to the frame A by a pivot, which pivot permits a free movelllellli of the same. I also form stops or projections e on the frame to limit the movement of the left'hand grapple d. The several grapplesare widened at their ends and beveled to make them more nearly conform to the chines of the barrel, and are preferably notched to secure a better hold.
I operate my device as follows: By first placing the grapples or hooks d under the lefthand edge or chine of the box or barrel when the frame is folded, and then unfolding the frame A over to the right. The grapples (1 will be prevented from falling back by means of the stops 0, so that when the frame reaches a horizontal position the said grapples will stand nearly When the article is the higher elevation has only to make use of the secondary handle by unfolding it from Within the end of the frame, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, and he will experience no inconvenience because of his higher elevation.
I claim as my invention'- 1. A barrel-lifter consisting of the frame having grapples or hooks at or near therespeotive ends thereof, substantially as de scribed, and for the purpose specified.
2. A barrel-lifter consisting of the frame having hooks or grapples at or near the respective ends thereof, and the folding secondary'handle, substantially as described, and for r 5 the purpose specified.
8. In a barrel-lifter, the jointed folding frame having the curved ends, handles, and grapples, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of the jointed and folding frame having handles 1) b and the stops 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified'.
