Description

UNIT D "STATES PATENT OFFICE."
JOHN MORISON HUNTER, on NEW YORK, N. r.
IMPROVEMENT .IN THE PREPARATION Ol-GLUE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,596. dated August 14, 1860.
" 1 In the manntacture of cit-fromwhah-bl ebber it has been usual to burn-the refuse scraps as fuel, such scraps being regarded as worthless, or nearly so, for any other economical purpose.
The object of my invention is to utilize this hitherto refuse product.. After a series of experiments I have succeeded in manufacturing glue economically from such refuse scrap left after the separation of the oil from blubber in the usualmanner.
My invention consists of a new article of manufacturenamely, glue-made from ordinary refuse scrap of whale-blubber.
Although I make no claim to the process of making glue from whale-blubber scrap, I will proceed to describe a method of manufacture, in order to enable others to make and use my invention.
Take the common refuse scrap left after the oil has been separated from the whale-blobber; put it into a. suitable boiler; add water, and boil the same sufficiently to separate the remaining oily matter, say usually from one to twelve hours. Then let the boiler, with its contents, cool, in order to separate the oily matter, which will rise to the surface, and may then be removed. The water is now evaporated until a proper jelly will form on cooling. The jelly thusformed'may be sliced in the usual man ner, and dried on netting in the open aiiywvhen it is ready for use.
I am aware that various portions of fish and cetaceans, including the scales, fins, tails, and
gristly parts, have been employed in the man ufacture of glue. Therefore I limit my claim to the particular improvement above describednamely, the manufacture of glue from the refuse scrap from the blubber of the different varieties of whale, known to \vhalemen by the names of sperm-whale, right-whale, and blacktish, and other similar scrap.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is'
The above-described glue as anew article of manufacture, the same being made-from whale-blubber scraps, substantially as described. I
- JOHN MORISON HUNTER.
