It is further among the objects of this invention to provide a valve which may be manufactured readily and inexpensively.
It is still further among the objects of this invention to provide a valve which may be readily assembled and taken apart without tools.
In practicing this invention, there is provided a generally cylindrical body containing a substantially hollow plunger slidably mounted therein. One end of the plunger extends beyond one end of the body and the other end of the plunger carries a washer of suitable material which seats against an inlet in the corresponding end of the body. The plunger is so proportioned as to provide an annular space between the body and the plunger which forms a valve chamber. The plunger also carries a shoulder on its outer surface which is adapted to receive and retain an O ring in sealing position against the inner wall of the body. A spring bears against the shoulder and also bears against one end of the body.
The plunger is provided with one or more ports communicating between the interior of the plunger and the valve chamber.
The plunger is actuated by means of a yoke pivotally mounted on pivot pins placed on the exterior of the extended end of the plunger. The yoke has a cam surface which is adapted to bear against the end of the body and when the yoke is pivoted about the pivot pins, causes the plunger to withdraw partially from the body, permitting the liquid to flow through the inlet around the closure into the ports and axially through the. hollow plunger.
The yoke may be actuated either by a simple handle afiixed to one end thereof or by means of a pair of depending rods connected at one or more points bya transverse bar. In the latter case, the cup or glass to be filled is placed against these depending bars and causes the yoke to pivot, withdrawing the plunger and permitting flow of liquid.
In the preferred form of the invention, a small air passage is placed between the interior of the plunger and the valve chamber at a point intermediate of the ends of said plunger. a reasonably sharp cut-ofi of flow when the valve is closed.
In operation, the valve is attached to the lower portion of a large vessel containing the liquid to be dispensed. The handle is depressed, causing the yoke to pivot about the pivot pins and the cam surface to bear againstthe cap. This in turn causes the plunger and the closure at its end to retract from the inlet.
Liquid may then flow through the inlet into the valve chamber, through the ports and through the hollow plunger to the outlet where it pours into the receptacle to be filled. Upon release of the handle the pressure of the spring exerted against the shoulder forces the plunger and the closure into seeking contact with the inlet opening. The valve is then closed since no liquid may flow into the inlet. At this point, the air passage permits the liquid which might be trapped within the hollow plunger, to drain immediately. For best results the air passage should be at an angle with the axis of the plunger, with the inner opening below the outer opening.

Fig. 7 shows an alternate form of yoke with a depending bar arrangement.
Container 11 is provided with an opening at or near the bottom thereof into which valve 1 is mounted. Valve 1 is secured by clamping ring 8 which bears against clamp washer 9, which seals container 11 between the washer 9 and sealing washer 10.
The valve 1 is composed of body 2 in which is slidably mounted plunger 3. At the upper end of plunger 3 is closure 6 adapted to seat against inlet 7 and which is of any suitable sealing material. Ports 4 are provided near the upper end of plunger 3 and on the exterior surface of said plunger, shoulders 12 are mounted. These shoulders serve a dual purpose in that they retain O ring 13 in sealing position against the inner wall of body 2 and provide a surface against which one end of spring 14 bears. The other end of spring 14 rests against the inner surface of cap 15 which in turn is threaded on the end of body 2. Cap 15 has an opening 21 corresponding to the cross-section of plunger 3 and also has slots 22 added thereto. Mounted on the extended end of plunger 3 are pivot pins 19 which are adapted to seat in pivot holders 24 on yoke 17. Yoke 17 is also provided with cam surface 18 which bears against cap 15, causing plunger 3 to partially withdraw from body 2 against the pressure of spring 14. Air passage 5, angled downwardly and from the outside to the inside of plunger 3, is provided to permit rapid draining of the hollow plunger when the valve is closed.
In assembling the valve, spring 14 is placed on plunger 3 by rotating said spring to enable it to pass over pivotpins 19. Cap 15 is then slipped over plunger 3 as shown in Fig. 3, with slots 22 allowing pivot pins 19 to pass through the cap. Once this has been accomplished, cap 15 is rotated so that slots 22 are out of alinement with pivot pins 19. Yoke 17 is provided with an inclined face 23 which readily enables the yoke to he slipped over pivot pins 19 so that said pins are held securely in pivot holders 24 by force of spring 14, as is shown in Fig. 5.
For ease of operation, yoke 17 is provided with handle 16 which terminates in knob 20.
Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 7, yoke 27 is provided with a cam surface 25 and pivot holders 24. Inclined face 23 permits the entire unit to he slipped into engagement with pivot pins 19 in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 5. Depending valve actuator 28 is composed of vertical members and at least one horizontal member which provide a surface against which the receptacle to be filled (such as a glass or cup) may be placed, and pressure brought to bear to cause cam surface 25 to actuate the valve in a manner similar to that described for the preferred embodiment.
While only two specific embodiments of this invention have been described, nevertheless the invention is to be broadly construed and such changes as are apparent to one skilled in the art may be made without departing from the scope and spirit thereof and this invention is to be broadly construed and not to be limited except by the character of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A valve comprising a body, a plunger slidably mounted in said body and extending beyond one end thereof, an annular space between the body and the plunger forming a valve chamber, a shoulder on said plunger receiving and retaining an 0 ring in sealing position against the inner wall of said body, a spring bearing against said shoulder and against said one end of said body, an inlet in the end of said body remote from said one end, said inlet communicating with said chamber, the end of said plunger nearest said inlet being provided with a closure sealing off the inlet when the valve is in the closed position, said plunger being hollow and having an outlet on the end remote from the closure, a port in said plunger located inwardly of said closure and connecting the valve chamber with the interior of said plunger, said plunger having an air passage extending from said valve chamber to the interior of the plunger, said air passage being at an angle with the axis of the plunger with the inner end of said passage nearer said extended end of the plunger, and means for actuating said plunger so as to withdraw the closure from the inlet and permit flow of liquid through the valve.

A valve according to claim 1 wherein the means for actuating the plunger comprises a pivot pin projecting outwardly from the extended end of said plunger, a yoke on said pin and provided with a cam surface bearing against said one end of said body, an inclined face and a pivot holder admitting ,and retaining said pivot pin on said yoke, and means for causing said yoke to pivot about said pin.
'3. A valve according to claim 2 wherein the means for causing said yoke to pivot is a depending valve actuator operated by pressure of a vessel to be filled.
4. A valve according to claim 2 wherein said one end comprises a cap provided with an opening in the center thereof through which said plunger extends, said opening having a slot adjacent thereto to permit the passage of the pivot pin therethrough.
