Be itknown that I, SOLOMON B. ELLITHoRR-f pack and compress the material within the bags, sacks, and the like, and to expedite the filling of the bags, sacks, and the receptacles in genera-l.
\Vith these and other objects in view my improvements consist of an inner perforated cylinder and an outer non-perforated cylinder connected at their tops, forming an interme: diate air-space, and the top connecting :means perforated for t-he escape of the air in the bran and the attached bag.
My improvement further consists in the combination of two vertical shafts-one within the other--carrying the package and compressing means and actuating mechanism.
My improvement further consists in the combination, with the double-walled cylinder with an intermediate airspace and theshafts carrying the package and compressing means, of an automatic yielding bottom for supportinjr the bag to be lled.
-My improvement further consists in the construction and combination of the vertical shafts-one vertically movable within the other--the packing devicesand the wipers.

The cylinder F consists of the inner per` forated cylindere, made preferably of perforated sheet metal, the outer non-perforated cylinder, f, made preferably of sheet-iii'on, and the horizontal flange h, connecting the cylinders with an intermediate airspace, i. horizontal 4flange is provided with a plurality of perforations, k, registering with the airspace t' of the double-walled cylinder. Suspended within this double-walled cylinder F from the cap-plate G are two Vertical shafts-one within the othercarrying the feeding and compressing means, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To the central slotted bar of the cap-plate C are secured adjustably the bearing Z, for the upper end of the outer shaft, and the intermediate bearings,m, arranged on opposite sides of the central slotted bar, and also a suspended bearing, n, for the lower gear-wheel, p,- also to this centralbar and the end bar are attached the upper and lower journal-bearings, r and s, for the horizontal shafts ,H and I, 4with gearing for operating the vertical shafts, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lower horizontal shaft is provided with a gear-wheel, t, meshing with a gear, a, mounted IOO on the end of the npper horizontal shaft. The inner ends of these horizontal shafts are provided with bevel-gears c and w,engaging with the bevel-gears c and fw', respectively, on the vertical shafts. rIhe bevel gears c 'w are splined on the horizontal shafts, and are thrown into and out of gear by shifting levers operated automatically by mill machinery. (Not shown in the drawings.)
The vertical hollow shaft K has firmly secured to its lower end the auger or feed-plate L, which is constructed with two or more slots, x, and beveled lips y, for conducting the material below to the bag. This feeding-.plate L is further connected to the shaft by means of the collars z and curved wire rods 1, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The shaft M, arranged within the vertical shaft K, is formed at vits upper end with screw-.threads 2 and key or spline ways 3, and having swivelly connected at its lower end the auger or feeding plate N, constructed like its companion plate L. These angers are connected by the vertical wires 4,`flxed to the lower auger, and passing upward loosely through perforations in the upper auger, to register the slots in'the angers and canse both angers to revolve together in the vrotary motion of the outer vertical shaft. The wire 'rods l and 4 of the angers also serve the office of agitators in distributing and conducting the bran to the formed slots in the angers. The screw-threads of the inner vertical shaft, M, engage with the screw-threads of the collar N2, supporting the upper bevel-gear.
Operation: The machine being properly organized and provided with a driving-pulley or its equivalent on the outer end of the lower horizontal shaft, a bag, sack, or the like is pulled np over the bottom of the suspended double-walled cylinder, and the yielding platform, resting lightly against the bottom ofthe said cylinder, assists in retaining the bag in place as well as preserving the opened condition 'of the same. The bran or other material is conducted through a spout leading from a reservoir intothe upper end of the doublewalled cylinder, and by the rotation of the feeding and packing means on the lower ends of the vertical shafts the bran is kept in motion and worked downward into the bag. As the bag fills it depresses, gradually and automatically, the yielding platform supporting it, and automatically strips itself from the holding-cylinder, until it is full, or nearly so. During this process of filling the bag, the air in the bran and bag escapes through the perforations of the inner cylinder and the horizontal fiange, thereby allowing the bran to become iiattened and compressed.V After the 6o bag is filledby the packing n1eans,the compressing means are brought into play by the antomatic shifting of the gearing, which causes the inner vertical shaft, with its bottom plate or auger, to descend for the purpose of compressing the bran more firmly within the bag and in a smaller space. By reversing the motion of the gearing and vertical shafts the angers are brought together, and the machine is again in condition for another. bag.
I reserve the right to vary the constrnction/ and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The yielding platform may be supported by cords and weights in lieuof the spiral springs.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A1. In a bran-packer, the combination of the inner perforated cylinder, outer non-perforated cylinder, and horizontal perforated flange, substantially as described.
2. In a bran-packer, the combination of the two upright shafts, one running within the other, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a bran-packer, an auger constructed in two parts, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
1i. rIhe combination of the double-walled cylinder and the two nprights with packing devices, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a bran-packer, the combination of the adJ nstable anger and the two upright shafts, as described, and for the purpose set forth. 9 5
6. In a bran-packer, in combination with the vertical shafts and packing means revolving the agita-tors therewith, as described and set forth.
7. Ina bran-packer, the combination of the inner vertical shaft with the lower compressing-anger and the suspended cylinder snpporting the bag, substantially as-described.
8. In a bran-packer, the combination of the upright shafts, angers, agitators, and cylinders, for the purpose set forth.
9. In a bran or feed packer, the combination of a snspendedcylinder, inside and outside upright shafts,with angers and agitators, and an automatic falling table, all as described, and for the purpose set forth.
