BALlNG-PRESS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,168, dated October 9, 1883, Application filed June 13,1893. (No model.)
To all whom, if/Jnay concern Be it known that .l', JosErH Us H. BA DGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Lenawec and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements inBa-ling-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a baling-press of a novel, simplified, and cfli cient construction, whereby bran, feathers, wool, orother similar light and elastic substances may be readily compressed into a small space and securely baled for shi ppin g or transportation to any desired point; and my improvements consist, essentially, of the details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described,'and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improvements with parts broken away to more fully show the construction, and Figs. 2 and 8 are detail. sectional views thereof.

In carrying out my invention, A represents the frame-work of the press, within the central portion of which is located a hollow vertical cylinder, B, formed preferably of sheet-iron and secured rigidly in place to the cross-beams of said frame A, as shown. At the lower portion of the frame-work A is provided a movablc sheet-iron cylinder, 0, which is adapted to fit around the stationary cylinder 13 and move up and down upon the same. To the top of the movable cylinder 0 is fastened the lower ends of the chains 0, the upper ends of which are secured to the roller or windlass D, jourinaled in the upper part of the frame A, and provided with a cog-wheel, D, as shown. .J'ournaled in the central portion of the frame A, and projecting down into the stationary cylinder B, is provided a screw, F, to the upper part of which is rigidly attached two bevelgears, b I), of unequal diameters, and located one above the other, whilethe lower end of the screw E engages with a vertical sleeve, E, carrying upon its lower end a removable disk, F, as shown. At the bottom of the framework A is provided a removable platform, G,
having a circular base of a diameter slightly larger than. the diameter of the lower cylinder, (3, and provided with uprights c c on two sides thereof, as fully shown in the drawings. Directly above the screw E, and journaled in the sidesof the frame A, is provided the driving shaft H, having the band or belt pulley H rigidly attached to one end thereof upon the outside of the frame-work A, while upon the' central. portion of the same is provided two bevel-gears, d d, of unequal size, which are adapted to engage alternately with the bevelgears I) I) to raise and lower the sleeve E and disk F through the medium of the screw F. Near the inner endof the said driving-shaft H is provided a small pinion, e, which is adapted to engage with the cog-wheel 1) upon the windlass D at the proper time to raise orlower the cylinder C. On. one side of the frameA is pivoted a suitable lever, I, connecting wit-l1 the end of the roller or windlass D in such a manner that the cog-wheel D may be readily thrown in or out of gear with the pinion 0 upon the driving-shaft 'H, said shaft being also provided with a similar lever, J, to cause the bevel-gears to revolve the screw E in either direction at pleasure. A suitable spout or conductor, K, opens into the upper part of the upper stationary cylinder, B, for the purpose of feeding the material to be compressed down into the lower or packing cylinder, U.
The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that in the operation of the same the sack in which the bran, feathers, or other material is to be packed is first drawn up over and around the lower cylinder, O, which is then lowered until the bot tom of the sack and the lower edges of the cylinder rests upon thecircular base of the platform G. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isi 1. \The herein-described baling-press, consisting of the frame A, provided with the stationary cylinder B, movable cylinder 0, platform G, screw E, provided with bevel-gears b b, sleeve E, and disk F, spout K, shaft H, provided with bevel-gears d d, pinion e, pulley H, and lever J, and the Windlass D, provided with cog-wheel D, chains a, and lever I, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a baling-press, the frame A, provided with the stationary cylinder B andmovable cylinder 0, in combination with the screw E, sleeve E, and disk F, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the 40 purpose specified.
