TOY.
PIICIIFICAT10h15] forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,845, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed January Q4, 1834. (No model.) I
which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention has reference to toys;l and it consists in the improved structure hereinafter described and set forth.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation, a portion being removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view, illustrating the parts arranged for storage or transportatiomandFig.
3 is a cross-section on the line l 2 of Fig. l.
rIhe toy consists, principally, of the' representation of a man aiming a gun, and detachably mounted on the base of a case, together with spring devices for causing a plunger or rod to be moved' violently forward in the gunbarrel, and project any rod or ball that may have been previously inserted in said barrel. Combined with the above and adapted to be erected at varying points on the cover of the case, `in advance of the figure above described, is a standard carrying detachably a targetdisk and a pivoted bird, designed when struck, to be forced back into a recess formed in the standard.
Arepresents the case, the bottom c of which is provided at one end with a block, b, ccntrally dovetailed, as illustrated in Fig. 3, to engage the dovetailed base c of the ngure B, and maintain the same in position, as shown in Fig. 1. A thumb-screw, q, is located on the dovetailed base, and when turned engages wi th the bottom of the base to lock the iigure B rigidly in position. The upper portion of the gure is cut away, as /shown in Fig. l, to contain a pivotedbell-crank lever, d, secured by a pivot-bolt, c, which also secures the other section, C, of the figurein" position, as shown `cured the representation'o of abird.
in Fig. 3. The barrel or tube D is provided at its rear end with an ear, f, perforated for its attachment to the projection g ofthe iigure, which projection eXteriorly represents the stock and hands holding the same. `The forward end of the bell-crank lever cl islooped to engage the hooked end h of a rod, E, the forward end, t', of which is headed, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. A contracting spring, j, connecting with the loop portion of the bellcrank lever and with a pin, 7c, on the projection g, normally tends to maintain the headed portion 'i of the rod E in the forward part of the barrel. The other member, l, of the bellcrank lever is bent, as illustrated in Fig. l, so that its end projects through a vertical slot formed between the upper portion of figure B and the section O. The spring traction on the bell-crank is limited by the upper'end of rod Zcoming in contact with that portion of the figure B forming the top m of the slot.` The cover F, sliding longitudinally in grooves formed in the sides of the boX A, has pivotally secured on its upper side a bar, G, proy vided with a series of perforations, one of which is adapted to receive the tapered end of a standard, H, the upper part of which is enlarged to--form a recess, n. At the upper front corner ofthe standard is pivotally seget-disk, p, is pivotally mounted at the rea-r upper corner of the standard behind the figure o.
- The operation ofthe device will be readily understood. 'When 'a small rod or ball is placed in the gun-barrel and the member Z of the bellcrank lever is depressed, the said bell-crank lever is tilted on its pivot and distends the spring j and likewise draws back the headed rod E. When pressure is. removed from the member 'lthe spring j quickly moves the bell-crank lever to its first position, and rapidly moving the rod E forward in the barrel expels the projectile against the target. If the ligure o is struck it will be tilted backward on its pivot, and drops out of sight into the recess of the standard. The bar G may be swung on its pivot to occupy the positions shown both by dotted and full lines, Fig. l, so
Ataras to increase or decrease the distance from the iigure B in which the various adjustments may be made in the perforations of the said bar. Bylongitudinally withdrawing the dovetailed portion c of the iigure B from the recess in the block Z), and by moving` the iigure o back into the recess of its standard, and removing the target disk from said standard, and the standard from the bar G, the parts may be readily arranged in the box, as shown in Fig. 2, and the same closed.
I claiml. The combination, in a toy, of a figure, B, detachably mounted in position and provided With devices for proj ecting` objects, and astandard carrying a target and detachably mounted in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a toy, of a box, a figure, B, detachably mounted in said box and provided with mechanism for projecting objects, and a standard carrying` a target andldetachably mounted in the cover of the box, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a toy,of a boX,a figure, B., provided with a dovetailed base adapted to engage a dovetailed recess in the boxbottom, a device for locking said base in position, mechanism combined with said figure for projecting objects, and a target detachably mounted in position, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a toy, of aboX,a iigure, B, detachably mounted in position and provided with means for proj ecting` objects, and a standard carrying a target and mounted in a rod provided with a series of recesses and pivotally secured to the cover of the boX, substantially as described.
5.` The combination, in a toy, of the figure B, `detachably mounted in position and provided with means for projecting objects, a standard mounted in position and provided with a recess in its upper portion, and a pivoted figure, o, on said standard, substantially as set forth and described.
6. The combination, in a toy, of a figure, B, detachably mounted in position and provided With a tube or barrel, D,-a pivoted bell-crank lever having` the projecting memberl, a headed rod playing in the tube or barrel and connected to the bell-crank lever, and a spring connected, as described, to said bell-crank lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
'JOHN ALONZO WARD.
