Definitions
- the present invention relates to a weighting device for the top rollers of drafting arrangements of spinning machines and more particularly to locking means for such a device.
- the weighting device includes an arm swingable on a stationary shaft and a locking pin which is movable in a bore in the arm and in a bore in the shaft. When the pin extends into both bores the arm is locked against rotation on the shaft. When the pin is retracted from one of the bores the arm is free to swing on the shaft.
- An advantage of the device according to the invention is the location of the locking mechanism within the weighting arm and its support so that fouling is avoided.
- the locking means can be unlocked by simply pressing or pulling a button.
- the locking member is urged into and retained in the locking position by spring pressure.
- Fig. 1 is a cross section of a weighting device according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 is a cross section of a modified weighting device according to the invention.
- numeral 1 designates a swing arm having a bore 2 through which extends a stationary tubular support shaft 3 which is rigidly connected with the machine frame, not shown.
- a pneumatic compression element in the form of a hose 4 is placed in the interior of the shaft 3.
- a pin 5 adapted to press on the hose 4 and having an extension projecting radially to the outside of the shaft 3.
- the latter may support only one arm 1 or may extend through a plurality of arms individually forming part of juxtaposed drafting arrangements whereby the number of pins 5 corresponds to the number of arms.
- the outwardly projecting extension of the pressure pin 5 presses against one end of a twoarm lever 6 which is swingably connected with the arm 1 by means of a pin 7.
- the forward end of the lever 6 swingably supports by means of a pin 8 a saddle 9 resting on trunnions 10 of top rollers of a drafting arrangement.
- the arm 1 can be prevented from swinging on the shaft 3 by means of a pin 11 having a head 13 at one of its ends movable in a bore 12 in the rear end of the arm 1.
- the head 13 is adapted to be received in a suitable bore 17 in the tubular shaft 3 and is pressed into the bore 17 by means of a spring 14 interposed between the head 13 and a split ring 16 placed in an annular recess of the bore 12.
- the pin 11 with its head 13 is pulled against the pressure of the spring 14 of manipulating a knob 18 connected with the pin 11 and projecting from the arm 1.
- the device may be locked by simply pressing the arm 1 down in clockwise direction.
- Fig. 2 illustrates an embodiment of the invention in which the locking means are somewhat different and require removal of the pneumatic pressure producing means from the shaft 19 supporting the swing arm 1' and location of the pneumatic means in a stationary tube 20 which is supported by the machine frame.
- the relatively short pin 5 of the device shown in Fig. 1 is replaced by a long pin 21 which is longitudinally slidable in a bushing 23 mounted on the machine frame 22.
- the shaft 19, which is rigidly connected with the machine frame 22, is provided with a bore 24 receiving a pin 25 having a cavity accommodating a coil spring 27.
- One end of the latter engages the wall of a bore 26 for the shaft 19 in a hub portion of the arm 1', the other end of the spring 27 abutting against the bottom of the cavity in the pin 25, urging the pin outwardly into a bore 29 in the arm 1' when the latter is in such position relatively to the shaft 19 that the bores 24 and 29 are aligned.
- a push-button 28 having a collar 30 abuts against an interior shoulder 31 in the bore 29 of the arm 1' for preventing falling of the push-button out of the arm.
- the inner end of the push-button 28 is conical and abuts against the outer end of the pin 25 which is pressed against the push-button by the spring 27.
- pressing the pin 25 against the push-button also presses the push-button against the shoulder 31.
- the pin 25 is pushed into the shaft 19 so that the arm 1' is free to rotate on the shaft 19. If locking of the device is desired, the arm 1' must be turned on the shaft 19 until the bores 24 and 29 are aligned and the pin 25 can snap into the bore 29 of the arm 1'.
- the device according to Fig. 2 is particularly suitable for drafting arrangements having top rollers which are weighted at their outer ends, each top roller being provided with a lateral arm which can be folded up for upwardly lifting the top rollers in the conventional manner.
- the arm can be unlocked and lifted in a simple manner by simultaneous use of the left and of the right hand of the operator.
- a weighting device for the top rollers of drafting arrangements comprising a stationary shaft, an arm swingable on said shaft, press means movably connected with said arm and adapted to engage the top rollers, pressure producing means connected with said press means for pressing the latter onto the top rollers, and lock means including a bore in said shaft and a bore in said arm and a lock member extending into both bores for rigidly fixing said arm on said stationary shaft when the device is in operating position, said lock means projecting from said arm to the outside for manually removing said lock memher from one of said bores for unlocking said arm from said shaft end permitting swinging of said arm on said shaft.
- a welghtmg device as defined an clalm 1 m which 2,813,308 Waldrop No 19, 1957 said lock member is in the form of a pin movably sup- 0 ported in the bore of said arm and adapted to project FOREIGN PATENTS into the bore of said shaft. 525,425 Canada May 22, 1956
