PENDULOUS ROTATABLE BOBBIN SUPPORT FOR SPINNING FRAMES AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. a, 1957 PENDULGUS ROTATABLE BOBBIN SUPPORT FOR SPINNTNG FRAMES AND THE LIKE Glenn S. Spencer, Horseheads, NX., assigner to Bendix Aviation Corporation, Elmira Heights, NX., a corporation of Delaware Filed Feb. 8, 1957, Ser. No. 639,014
2 Claims. (Cl. 242-1302) The present invention relates to a pendulous rotatable bobbin support for spinning frames Iand the like and more particularly to that type of bobbin holder in which the bobbin is retained on the holder by a rotatable oblong latch which may be positioned to engage an internal shoulder of the bobbin.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel bobbin holder which is eiective and reliable in operation while being simple and economical in construction.
It is another object to provide such -a device which, when in use, is protected from entry of lint or dust.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a sideelevation of a preferred form of the invention'partly broken away and in section; and
Fig. 2'is a side View of `the body portion of the bobbin holder seen -from the right in Fig. l, with the spring detent broken away in order to expose the -latch mechanism.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing there is illustrated a shaft or stem 1 which is rotatably suspended from a channel member 2 of a spinning frame by means of a universal bearing 3 attached as indicated at 4 to said channel member.
An oblong latch member 5 is mounted on the lower end of the stem 1 by means of a horizontal cross pin 6. As best shown in Fig. 2, the latch 5 comprises two plate members 7, 8 of rectangular shape with beveled ends, and square ratchet elements 9, 11 compressed against a centrally-located spacing sleeve 12 by riveting over the ends of the pivot pin 6. The sleeve 12 thus provides the journal bearing for the latch in the stem 1.
A cylindrical body member 13 is slidably mounted on lthe stem 1 by means of a bearing plate 14 xed in the upper end of said body, and is adapted to be received in the central opening 15 of a hollow bobbin 16 to be mounted on the holder. The body 13 is provided with slots 17, 18 through which the ends of the latch 5 are adapted to project when the latch is in horizontal position, and thereby engage an internal shoulder 19 in the bore of the bobbin 16.
Means for rotating the latch 5 Afrom horizontal to vertical position and vice versa is provided comprising a spring -pawl member 21 fixed to the interior of the body 13 as indicated at 22 and having at its lower end a hook 23 adapted to engage the square ratchet elements 9, 11 of the latch on upward movement of the body 13. Yielding means cooperating with the spring pawl for holding the latch in either its horizontal or vertical position is\ provided in the Iform of a spring detent 24 attached at 25 tothe interior of the body 13 and pressing against the dat sides of the ratchet members 9, 11 of the latch 5, whereby the ratchet members are cammed to their indexed position and'yieldingly held under compression between the pawl 21 and detent 24.
The pawl 21 and detent 24 are formed with shoulders 26, 27 which are positioned to rest on the upper faces of the ratchet members 9, 11 and thus limit the downward movement of the body 13 on the stem 1.
Patented .lune 14, 1960 Y shown at 28 for centering engagement with Ithe upper end of the bobbin 16 when the bobbin is pressed up on the bobbin holder. A spring 29 surrounding the stem 1 between the bearing 3 and plate 14 urges the body 13 to ward 4its lower-most position.
Upward movement of the body 13 on the stem 1 is limited by a shoulder 31 on said stem in position to cooperate with the bearing plate 14 for that purpose. Said plate -is preferably provided with a bushing 32 of fiber or other suitable material forming a lint-excluding bearing for the stem and an abutment for engaging the shoulder 31.
In operation, the latch 5 of the bobbin holder is oriented in a vertical position when the holder is not in use. In order to mount a bobbin on the holder, the bobbin is pressed up from below, raising the body 13 of the holder until the hook 2.3 of the pawl 21 engages the ratchet members 9, 11 and rotates the latch to its horizontal position, the final movement of rotation being assisted by the detent spring 24. The bobbin is then allowed to move downward with the body '13 until the internal shoulder 19 of the bobbin engages the ends of the latch as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To release the bobbin, the operation is repeated, causing the latch 5 to be again rotated through 90 so as to bring the latch within the contines of the body 13 as illustrated in full lines in Fig. l whereby the bobbin is permitted to slip on the body, which returns to its idle position supported by the shoulders 26, 27 of the pawl and detent.
Although but one form of the invention has been shown and described in detail it will be understood that changes may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1 claim:
l.. In a rotary pendulous bobbin holder a supporting stem, means for rotatably suspending the stem from a creel board, an oblong latch member mounted to rotate on a horizontal axis at the lower end of said stem, a cylindrical body member slidably mounted on the stem having openings through which the ends or" said latch project when in horizontal position for engagement with an internal shoulder in a hollow bobbin to be supported thereby, said latch having a square ratchet element rigidly incorporated therein with its sides normally vertical and horizontal, an elastic -pawl member fixed to the interior of said body bearing on a vertical side of the ratchet element and having means on its lower end to engage and rotate the latch when the body is moved upward on said stem, a spring detent fixed to the interi-or of said body opposite to said pawl and bearing on the opposite vertical side of the ratchet, said pawl and detent having shoulders adapted to rest on the top side of the lratchet element to support the body on the stem when there is no bobbin on the holder.
2. A bobbin holder as set forth in claim 1 in which the body of the holder is adapted to enter loosely into the bobbin to be supported, and the upper end of the body is ared outwardly to a diameter substantially larger than the opening in the bobbin, said flared end being closed by a bearing plate ixedly mounted therein and having a lint-excluding bearing slidably engaging said stem.
