E. K. BAUER WINDING CORE SUPPORT Filed Nov. 13, 1950 sept'. s, 1953 INVENTOR. ERNEST A. BAUER Arran/S vof Figure 1 showing in addition Patented Sept. 8, 1953 Ernest K. continuous pressure between the core and the driving roll throughout the building of the package, and in which the core is readily replaced in preparation for the winding of the next package. These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the drawing and the description thereof hereinafter.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a single winding core supporting unit which comprises a part of a multiple winding machine constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view as seen at II-II parts of adjoining units;
Figure 3 shows the movable core supporting structure of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a detail section taken online IV--IV of Figure 3.
As shown in Figure 1, the winding machine comprises a driving roll or cylinder 3 which is positively rotated about its axis and against the periphery of which the winding core or carrier 4 bears. A traverse guide 5- carried on the reciprocable traverse bar or rail 6 serves to guide the thread into the nip between the driving roll and the core or the winding thereon. VA fixed rail vl extends horizontally the length of the machine above and toward the back of thedriving roll 3. The rail 1 carries at spaced'intervals along its length a number of brackets 8, the base portions 9 of which are bolted to the rail 1 by means of the bolts I0 and the nuts Il. Each of the brackets comprises two upwardly projecting arms I2 and |2a. The arm I2 com-f prises two parts. One part I3 is upright and integral with the base 9 from which it extends at right angles and comprises a laterally extending semi-cylindrical boss I4 having a semicylindrical bore I5. This part I3 of the arm terminates in a horizontal plane and has secured to it a part |6 provided with a semi-cylindrical boss and a semi-cylindrical bore I8 which mate with the corresponding boss and boreof the part I3 to provide a, horizontal split bearing for the rods or shafts I9. The part IB is secured to the 6 Claims. (Cl. 242-4130) part 3 by cap screw 20 and in the lower part of its outer end, it is provided with a recess or bore 2| which is adapted to receive a solid or hollow button, plug or cup 22 axially slidably mounted therein and a spring 23 for urging the button outwardly from the recess. The button 22 yhas an externally facing base, which is preferably flat and isv adapted tofrictionally rub against one face of the arm 24'of the core-supporting bracket. The arm |2a extends upwardly and is provided with a cylindrical bore or recess 25 containing a button 26 which is urged outwardly from the recess by a spring 21 therein. The disposition of the bore 25 in arm |2a is preferably in alignment'with the bore 2| in arm |'2 so that buttons22 and'26 are urged against opposite faces Yof the arm 24. As shown, the contiguous friction surfaces of buttons 22 and 26 and of arm 24 lie in parallel planes perpendicular to the axis of rods |9.
The core holder` or support proper comprises the rod or shaft` |`9 mentioned hereinabove to which an arm 24 and a hinge member or bracket 28 are secured adjacent the opposite ends thereof, such'as by meansof taper pins 29 'and 30 respectively. The arm 24 is integral with the sleeve 24a which I'lts about the rod I9 andthe hinge bracket 28 has a similar sleeve 28a which ts about the rod I9. The sleeves 24a and 28a are spaced from the ends of the rod or shaft I9 so that Vthe ends of the rod project a short distance into the split bearings (comprising bores I5) of Aadjacent arms I2. They may project into such bores any distance but, as shown, each end projects slightly less than half way thereintoto leavea corresponding portion of the bore available for the projection thereinto of the adjacent rod |9 of adjacent core holders. The sleeves 24a and 28a abut against the ends Vof the split bearings; with the interposition of a washer or Washers, such as 4|, if desired, and they thereby prevent axial movement of the rod The hinge bracket 28 has a laterally projecting lug 3| bored to receive a pintle 32. A yoke 33 has a bifurcated portion complemental to, and adapted vto embrace, the lug 3|. This bifurcated portion is provided with aligned bores to receive the pintle 32. The yoke 33 carries xedly secured thereto an outwardly extending arm 34. A spring 35 extended between a pin 36 on the sleeve 28a and a pin 31 on the yoke 33 urges the yokey in a clockwise directionl as viewed in Figure 3. rIfhe arms .24 and34 are provided with rotatable trunnions 38 Uand 39 lrespectively trunnion. the 'ihrsad adapted to fit within a cylindrical core or yarn carrier. The arm 34 may have an oset terminal portion or extension 4B to serve as a handle.
The trunnions are preferably provided with an elastic band 38a, such as of rubber, in a recess 39a adjacent the ange 39h. The band may be of round or any other section including the generally =trapezoidal section shown ,and serves to bind or grip the edge: of the core 4 and the yarn when the starting end of the latter is inserted between the trunnion and the core 4 at the beginning of winding. Each ,is preferably provided with an annular recess 390.
very simple manner merely by removing the cap screw 20.
It is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the 5 spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
