6 Claims. (Cl. 210-347) Another object of my invention is to provide a filter capable of being packaged as a kit and in a knockeddown condition for distribution as do-it-yourself merchandise whereby the same may be readily assembled by the user in accordance with accompanying instructions.
A further object of my invention is` to provide a filter of the foregoing described character which is so constructed and arranged that the same may be readily used in connection with private swimming pools or the like.
An important object of my invention is to provide `a filtering system employing a filter of the foregoing described character which operates in conjunction with feeding means for supplying a filtering medium to the filter.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a filter and feeding means of the foregoing described character which are simple in construction, durable in use, economical in manufacture, efficient in operation and easy of assembly.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which` the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

In practicing my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I provide a reservoir, for example, a swimming pool P, equipped with the usual side and bottom walls with one of the side walls, in proximity its top, having extending therethrough an outlet pipe 5 leading from the outlet of a pump 6, the latter being equipped with an inlet connected to a feed pipe 7 and driven by a suitable motor 8. The feed pipe 7 extendsy into the lower portion of the casing 9 of the filter 10 through a gland 11 provided in one of the walls of the casing 9 and which Patented oct. 25, 1960 pipe 7 is formed, within the casing, with a plurality of inlet openings into which are fitted the lower ends of sleeves or nipples 12.
Disposed within the casing 9 is a filter pack comprising a plurality of spaced vertically arranged lter plates or leaves 14 each encased within an envelope or wrapper 15 of filtering paper and having sections 16 arranged in adjacent abutting relation and formed on their upper and lower faces with transversely extending grooves 17 -and 18, respectively. The side faces of the plates 14 are provided with ribs 19 to define, between the ribs and paper, channels 20 extending throughout the lengths of the faces. The upper and lower ends of the plates have connected thereto upper and lower bars 21 and 22 'formed with tongues 23 and 24 extending into said grooves 17 and 18, respectively, whereby the sections of each plate are maintained in assembled relation.
The tongues 24 of the lowerbars 22 are of a greater height, vthan the depths of the grooves 18 to provide channels 325 on each side of the tongues 24 and which communicate with the channels 20. Intermediate their ends, the bars 22 are formed with openings 26 in which are accommodated the upper ends of the sleeves 12 while the tongues are formed, between their ends, with transverse slotsn 27 effecting communication between the channels 25 and the sleeves 12 whereby liquid from the channels 20 will flow into the pipe 7 as hereinafter more fully described.
The upper portion of one of the walls of the casing 9 has extending therein one end of a return pipe 29 which empties into the casing and is connected at its other end to a pipe 30 extending into the bottom of the pool. It will therefore be apparent that when the pump `6 is operated, water from the poolwill flow into the casing through the pipe 29 and be, filtered through the filter pack and returned to the pool through the pipes 7 and 5 thus supplying the pool with filtered water. The lower pory'tion of the casing is provided with a drain '32 to permit draining and cleaning of the casing. The drain may be connected to a dry well or sewage conduit and the pump utilized in conjunction with suitable piping and valves vto effect forced draining of the casing. p
When desired, the water to be filtered may be supplied with a suitable filtering medium or material, for instance, diatomaceous earth and which is contained within a pot ora housing 35 with the latter having its upper end communicating with the pipe 29 by means of an outlet pipe 36 provided with a` valve 37. The lower portion of the housing 35 has rotatably mounted therein a jet nozzle 38 rotatably mounted within a stuliing box and communicating with a ysleeve 39 extending outwardly of the housing and connected to an inlet pipe 40 provided with a valve 41, the pipe 40 being in turn connected to the pipe 5 adjacent the pump 6. In operation, when it is desired Vto supply the filter with filtering material, the valves 37 ,and 41, are manipulated to permit water from the pipe 5 'an onen too and provided with a Quaternary of side Walls n 45 ,and a bottom wall 46 on which is secured a frame 47 having connected ythereto corner uprights 4S. The side walls are secured together and to the corner uprights, frame and bottom walls by nails or the like and the exposed surfaces of the casing coated withY suitable water'- proofing material. Obviously, numerous advantagesfare obtained by; mounting the leaves entirely over or above the drain conduit or pipe 7 as herein disclosed, for instance, (l) a blowout may be readily obtained and the liquid within the casing salvaged by cutting off the ow of liquid into the casing 9 from the pipe 29 and operating the pump to drain the liquid from the casing and leaves above the usual sump, (2) the pump employed may be of a relatively small light duty type wherein its suction action is auxiliated by the gravity ow of the liquid downwardly be arranged with the other components of the filter into a compact unit before assembly for convenient packaging and distribution.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efficient filtering system not only for use in connection with swimming pools and the like but for use in other installations whereby the filter is operated through negative pressure and a filtering medium supplied thereto automatically or as desired. The simple construction of my filter is such that the various components or parts, when disassembled, may be arranged into a rela- 1 tively small and compact package or kit and thus sold as do-it-yourself merchandise for installation and assembly by the purchaser or user.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly 'since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in vvarious forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
.1. In a filter of the class described, a casing provided wlth an inlet for supplying said casing with liquid to be filtered, an outlet pipe extending into said casing and .adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a plurality of spaced filter-leaves arranged in said casing above said pipe, each of said leaves comprising a ,group of plate members disposed in edge-to-edge abutting relation and having side faces formed with vertical channels, bar members connected to the upper and lower ends of said plate members, respectively, envelopes disposed .about said members and constructed of filtering material for filtering said liquid into said channels, said first and vsecond-mentioned members constituting respective groups with one group being provided with tongues and the other ygroup being formed with grooves receiving said tongues with the tongues of one lgroup at the lower ends of said `plate members being of a greater length than the depth of the grooves into which they are received to thus form horizontal collection channels at said lower ends communicating with said iirst-mentioned channels, said bar whereby liquid from within said casing is filtered and' large open space therein and an inlet for supplying said open space with liquid to be filtered, outlet means extending a substantial distance into said open space within said casing and adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a filter pack arranged in said open space entirely above said outlet means and including a plurality of fiat filter leaves spaced from each other along said outlet means, each of said leaves having side faces formed with vertical channels and a horizontal collection channel at its lower end communicating with said vertical channels, envelopes disposed about said leaves, respectively, and constructed of filtering material for filtering said liquid into said channels, said leaves being provided with openings communicating with said horizontal channels and said outlet means whereby liquid from within said casing is filtered through said envelopes and drawn into said outlet means by the action of said pump.
3. In a filter construction, a casing having a relatively large open space therein and an inlet for supplying said Vopen space with liquid to be filtered, an outlet conduit extending a substantial distance into said open space within the lower portion of said casing and adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a filter pack arranged in said open space entirely above said con duit and in fixed relation with said conduit and said casing, said pack having a plurality of fiat filter leaves spaced from each other along and crosswise of said conduit, each of said leaves having side faces formed with vertical channels and a horizontal collection channel at its lower end communicating with said vertical channels, envelopes disposed about said leaves, respectively, and constructed of filtering material for filtering said liquid into said channels, said leaves being provided with openings communicating with said horizontal channels and said conduit whereby liquid from within said casing is filtered through said envelopes and drawn into said conduit by the action of said pump.
4. ln a filter construction, a casing having a relatively large open space therein and an inlet for supplying said space with liquid to be filtered, outlet means extending a substantial distance into said space within said casing and adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a filter pack arranged in said space entirely above said outlet means and including a plurality of lter leaves spaced from each other along said outlet means, each of `said leaves being formed with downwardly extending channels and a substantially horizontal collection channel at its lower end communicating with said downwardly extending channels and said outlet means, filtering means disposed about said leaves, respectively, and constructed of filtering material for filtering said liquid into said channels, whereby liquid from within said casing is filtered through said filtering means and drawn into said outlet means by the action of said pump.
5. In a filter of the class described, a casing having a large open space therein and an inlet for supplying said open space in the casing with liquid to be filtered, an outlet pipe extending a substantial distance into said open space in said casing and adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a filter pack arranged in said open space above said pipe and including a plurality 0f fiat filter leaves spaced from each other along said pipe, each of said leaves comprising a group of plate members disposed in edge-to-edge abutting relation and having side faces formed with vertical channels, bar members connected to the upper and lower ends of said plate memlmembers constituting respecting groups with one group being provided with tongues and the other group being formed with grooves receiving said tongues with the tongues of one group at the lower ends of said plate members being of a greater length than the depth of the gfves into which they are received to thus forrn horil ,ai

In a lter of the class described, a casing having a large open space therein and an inlet for supplying said open space in the casing with liquid to be iiltered, an outlet pipe extending a substantial distance into said open space in said casing and adapted to be connected to the negative pressure side of a pump, a lter pack arranged in said open space above said pipe and including a plurality of at lter leaves spaced from each other along said pipe, each of said leaves comprising a plate having side faces formed with vertical channels, bars connected to the upper and lower ends of said plates, respectively, envelopes disposed about said plates and constructed of filtering material for filtering said liquid into said channels, said bars being provided with tongues, said plates being formed With grooves receiving said tongues with the tongues of the lowermost bars being of a greater length than the depth of the grooves into which they are received to thus form horizontal collection channels at said lower 25 ends communicating with said irst mentioned channels, said bars being provided with openings between their ends communicating with said pipe and said second mentioned channels whereby liquid from within said casing is filtered and drawn through said pipe to said pump.
