END-GATE FOR wAeoNs.
SPECIFICATION formirfg part of Letters Patent No. 295,750, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed January 11, 1884. (No model.)
To /LZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, HENRY W. Ginn and Fninnnrcn T. FrNcxE, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Sigel, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in End-Gates for Wagons; and wedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures oil reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon-body, showing the application of our invention; Fig. i 2, a detail perspective view of the corner-plate, and Fig. 3 a similar view of one of the gatecleats.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wagons, and has for its object to provide means whereby a wagon body or box may be more readily constructed and securely held together, and the usually-employed wooden cleats for securing the end-gates in place dispensed with, a further object being to protect the edges of the end-gates and prevent their wearing off or becoming y, wedged by expansion in their confined position, such wedging or binding rendering it at times very diiiicult to remove said gates when found necessary; also, when in place these gates will be iirmly held and prevented from rising `or shaking loose `by the jar of` the wagon, this being an especial advantage in transporting grain or other iine matter. At the same time a wagon-body constructed according to our 4invention is rendered neat in finish and very durable in its use. These objects we attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter, more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the sides of a wagon body or box, and B the front end-gate.
To each end of the wagon-body sides is bolt-` ed or riveted a metal plate, C, made integral with ilanges D, forming a groove for the endgates, and also with a right-angular bottom plate, E, to which is secured and held in y position the wagon-bottom F, by means of a` bolt, b, passing through an opening, c, in said bottom plate and wagon-bottom, a web, G,
C, through-which is inserted the fasteningrod, K, said rod resting in the shouldered recesses c, to hold the gate in its proper position and prevent the same from shaking loose or becoming displaced by the jar of the wagon. For the front gate the cleats H terminate at their upper extremities in angular projections e, to which is bolted or riveted the foot-rest L, while those of the hind gate generally terminate at the point marked f. v
It will be noticed that the. flanges D are somewhat inclined outwardly upon their in ner faces, thus allowing Ithe end-gates to expand without binding, and thereby render their insertion or removal from the grooves formed by said flangesI at all times easy 0faccomplishment without marring or breaking.
By the employment of metal corner-plates constructed as above described, and secured to the ends of a wagons side-boards, the bottom board or boards can be easily and securely connected thereto and the manufacture of wagons greatly facilitated and cheapened, while by the confining-flanges forming grooves for the reception of the end-gates,
and the cleats H, having shouldered recesses Q for the binding-rods, said end-gates are firmly secured in position, andthe entire body or box rendered extremely strong and tight. These corner-plates and end-gate cleats can be easily manufactured and sold on the market, to the great convenience of manufacturers and others building or repairing Wagons.
Having now fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with an end-gate for Wagons, provided with cleats having shouldered have hereunto subscribed our names in the recessed ribs and a fastening-rod, plates made presence of two witnesses.
with flanges to form grooves for the reception HENRY W. GIER. of the gabe, and a bottom plate and strength- FRIDERICH T. FINGKE. 5 ening-Web, substantially as and for the pur- Witnesses:

In testimony that we claim the above We GOTTHILF C. MLLER.
