Description
UNITED STATES DAVID LEE, JR., oFMoUNr WILLING, ALABAMA.-
ATENT Orr-ICE.
COMBINED CANE AND' cIeAR-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,654, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed November 16, 1883. (No Incdel.)
To all whom, it Inu/, y concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID LEE, Jr., of Mount Villing, Lowndes county, Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Combined Cane and Cigar-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, aud exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cane in which a quantity of cigars and matches can be carried.
The invention consists in a hollow cane containing a tube adapted to receive a number of cigars, which are pressed upward and outward by a spiral' spring in the bottom of the tube, the uppermost 'cigar being held by springs secured in the upper end of the tube.
A cap adapted to receive matches is hinged to i the upper end of the cane.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, formi ng part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of myimproved combined cane and cigarcase. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the upper part ofthe cane, showing the match receiving cup opened. Fig. 3 is a top view of the cane, showing the match-receiving cup opened. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the cane on the line m x, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional View on the line y y, Fig. 1. The cane A, which is made hollow, is adapted t0 receive a tube, B, having its lower end open, which tube is provided at its upper end with suitable notches for holding it in place in the cane in such a manner that it can be removed very easily. In the bottom ofthe cane a spiral spring, C, is placed, and at the upper` end two springs, D, are soldered or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the tube. The upper ends of the springrD, which are pressed toward each other, are concaved, so as `to Iit closely against a cigar. To the upper end of the cane a hollow cap, E, is hinged, the lower end of which can be closed by a laterallyswinging plate, F, pivoted to the bottom ofthe Icap. The cap E is to receive thematches,
i and the plate F is to prevent the matches from dropping out. The cane is provided with a spring-catch, G, for locking and holding the cap on the cane by simply swinging the cap down on the upper end ofthe cane.
The tube B is withdrawn, and is then filled with cigars and inserted in the hollow cane, whereby the spring C will be compressed. The spring D rests .against the uppermost cigar, and prevents it from being thrown entirely out of the `tube by the spring C. If a cigar is desired, the cap E is swung back to uncover the upper end of the cane, and a cigar is seized and withdrawn from the tube. As soon as a cigar is withdrawn the rest are pushed upward by the spring G.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a hollow cane adapted to receive cigars, of a spiral spring secured in the bottom of the hollow or recess in thecane, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a hollow cane, of a removable tube fitting inthe same, and of a spiral spring, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the cane A, of the tube B, the spiral spring C at the bottom, and the springs D at the top of the tube, substantially as herein shown and described, and
for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the cane A, of the tube B and the pivoted cap E, forming a match receptacle, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The combination, with the cane A, of the tube B, the hinged cap E, and the pla-te F, pivoted to the bottom of the said cap, substantially as herein shown and described, and
for the purpose set forth.
DAVID LEE, JR. IVitnesses:
G. YV. COKER, BILLIE DUNN.
