SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,494, dated March 18, 1884.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pinchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an end viewofthejaws of the pinchers. Fig. 3 is a side view.

This invention has relation to instruments for drawing the staples from wire fences, andfor other purposes to which it may be adapted; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangementoft'heexternally-rounded fulcrum surfaces of the jaws of a pair of pinchers or grippers, the interior inclined or sloping surfaces of said jaws extending to themeeting ends thereof and the notches in said ends, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters A and B designatethe opposite jaws of a pair of pinchers or grippers having the lever-arms G and D, and pivoted together at e. The jaws A and B are symmetrical, each being rounded in convex form on its outer surface, and projecting outward beyond the line of the jawhandles when closed together. In this way lateral rounded fulcrums g g are formed. The inner surface of each jaw, commencing at its extremity or meeting edge h, is made sloping or inclined, so that a wedge-like end is formed, which is adapted when the jaws are applied on each side of a wire to be easily inserted under the same in such a manner as to raise it. These wedge-like ends is k are acute-angular, and are well adapted to be brought together under the wire with a powerful wedging force which causes the wire to rise. In the terminal edge h of each jaw is formed a central notch, n, of sufficient size to embrace one-half of a staple ;La11d when the jaws are closed together under the wire, the staple which holds the wire to the post or other bearing is embraced by the notches. In order to draw the staple when the instrument is in position, as above described, it is turned to one side or the other on the rounded or projecting fulcrum surfaces of its jaws, thereby raising the wire sufficiently from the post or other bearing to extract the staple therefrom.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ]S-

The stapleextractor consisting of a pair of leverjaws pivoted together, and having laterally-projeeting rounded fulcrum surfaces 9, interior inclined surfaces commencing at the meeting edges of the jaws and forming with said rounded surfaces wedge-like ends Ir, and the central staple-receiving notches, a, made in the terminal ends'of the jaws, substantially as specified.
