W..D. CHAPMAN.
, ARTIFIUIAL FISH BAIT.
No. 295,850. Patented Mar. 18, 1884 WITNESSES INV NTOE.

ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM DUDLEY CHAPMAN, OE THERESA, NEW YORK.
ARTIFICIAL FISH-BAIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,350, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed December 10, 1883.
To CD12: whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that LXVILLIAM D. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Theresa, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Baits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l. is a side elevation of my improved artificial bait. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on theline a? as, and Fig. 4 is a similar section on the line 3 y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
Myinvention has relation to revolving metallic bait used in trolling for fish, or so-called minnow-propellers; and it consists in an improvement upon the minnow-propeller for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 104,930, dated July 5, 1870, (antedated May 4, 1870,) have been granted to me. The nature of said improvement will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A and B denote two corresponding plates ofsheet metal, by preference silver-plated or nickel-plated, and cut of the shape shown in the drawings, each plate being gradually enlarged toward its rear end, where it is provided with a series of notches, 0. At their upper reduced ends these plates are soldered or otherwise fastened upon a small metallic tube, D. They are then bent around said tube in opposite directions, and then again fastened to the same near its lower end, the points of attachment ofthe plates (No model.)
used for trolling, inasmuch as the water will pass between the central tubular rod and the openings or water-ways G G on both sides of the same, but the device will revolve with greater speed and regularity than the old de vice without reducing its strength or increasing the cost of manufacture.
That part of the tubular stem D which is between the points of attachment of plates A and B is wrapped with foil, (shown at H,) which is held in place by silk cords I, of variegated colors, or fine wire twisted spirally around the tube. This adds to the attractive ness of the bait without materially increasin its cost.
0 represents the lock-Snood, which is of ordinary construction, and upon the central portion of which the tubular stem D rotates.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 7 of the United States 1. The artificial trolling-bait, composed of the central tube, D, the curved plates A B, of gradually-iucreasing width toward their lower ends, having the notches O, and-fastened to the central tube at the points E and 1*, whereby open spaces G are left on opposite sides of the tube, between it and the con ti guous edges of the plates, and the lock-Snood C, inserted through the tube, all constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The artificial trolling-bait, composed of the central tube, D, having a foil envelope or wrapping, H, held in place by cords or a fine wire, I, the curved plates A B, of graduallyinereasiug width toward their lower ends, having the notches C, and fastened to the central tubeat the points E and F, whereby open spaces G are left on opposite sides of 5 the tube, between it and the contiguous edges of the plate, and the lOGk-SHOOd G, inserted through the tube, all constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DUDLEY CHAPMAN.
