Description
Sept. 20, 1960 H. P. MCKELVEY EXTENSION NOZZLE Filed Aug. 25, 1958 INVNTOR. HEN/P) P M' KEL'I/EY ATTURN EYS United States Patent 2,953,285 EXTENSION NOZZLE Henry P. McKelvey, Daytona Beach, Fla. Filed Aug. 25, 1958, Ser. No. 756,805
2 Claims. (Cl. 222567) This invention relates to a caulking tool, and more particularly to an extension nozzle for a caulking tool.
The object of the invention is to provide an extension member which is adapted to be releasably or detachably connected to a caulking gun or tool so that hard to reach locations or areas may be readily caulked.
Another object of the invention is to provide an extension member which is adapted to be mounted on the nozzle of a caulking tube so that the tool will have a longer reach, and wherein the extension member of the present invention is provided with a small outlet end so that fine or accurate caulking can be more easily accomplished.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extension nozzle for a caulking tube which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying. drawing, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view showing a caulking gun and illustrating the extension member of the present invention, and showing the parts separated.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure -1, showing the extension member connected to the caulking gun.
Figure 3 is a view looking at one end of the extension member.
Figure 4 is a view looking at the opposite end of the extension member from Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates a caulking gun that includes a main body portion 11 that has a flange 12 on its front end, and the flange 12 is provided with a slot or cutout 13, Figure l.
The numeral 19 indicates a caulking tube which is arranged contiguous to the main body portion 11, and the caulking tube 19 includes a cylindrical casing or container 14 and an end wall 15. A hollow nozzle 17 extends forwardly through the end wall 15 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the numeral 16 indicates caulking compound which is arranged in the casing 14.
According to the present invention there is provided an extension member which is indicated generally by the numeral 20, and the extension member 20 is of one piece construction and is adapted to be made of a suitable material such as soft plastic material.
'Ihe extension member 20 includes a rounded support member 21 which is arranged contiguous to the end wall 15 when the parts are in the assembled position as shown in Figure 2. The extension member 20 further includes an integral tube or neck 22 and the tube 22 has a tapered formation so that the outer end portion 23 is of less diameter than the other end portion 24. The outer end portion of the tube 22 is open and cutaway as at 25.
As shown in the drawing the tube 22 is longer than the nozzle 17.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided an improvement for a caulking gun wherein 2 there is provided an extension nozzle, or member such as the member 20. According tothe present invention the member 20 can 'be connected to the caulking tube 19 .shown'in Figure 2-so-thatwhen pressure is applied to the tube 19 the u k ngs r en dilfi w ll b d sh out through the nozzle 17, and then out through the extended end of the tube 22. Since the tube 22 is longer than the nozzle 17, it will be seen that greater reach is provided. Furthermore, the outer end portion 23 of the tube 22 is of somewhat reduced diameter so that the stream of caulking compound-passing out through the end 25 will be of a small size so that the caulking compound can be applied to hard to reach locations in a fine stream whereby more accurate placement of the caulking compound is possible.
The extension member 20 includes a support member 21 and tube 22 which are formed as one piece or secured together and when the extension member 20 is not needed, it can be removed. When the extension member 20 is in the position shown in Figure 2 it is clamped securely in place so that accident-a1 disengagement of the member 20 is prevented.
The tube 22 is of such a diameter that it snugly receives therein the nozzle 17, and the portion 21 of the member 20 is positioned between the end wall 15 and flange '12 so that the portion 21 is clamped therein in place. The tube 22 extends through the slot or cutout 13 in the flange 12.
It is to be noted that the caulking tube 19 and gun 10 are releasable from each other so that parts can be moved from the position shown in Figure 2 to the position shown in Figure 1 as for example when the extension member 20 is to be removed or replaced.
The extension member 20 can be made of any suitable material such as a soft plastic type of material.
The member 21 is shaped so that it snugly fits in place against the wall 15. When pressure is applied, the caulking material will issue out through the end 25, and the use of the extension member 20 permits the tool to have longer reach and the small opening 25 permits finer caulking work to be accomplished.
The extension member can be used on various types of equipment such as tubes or caulking tools, or it can be used with frame type caulking guns, and it can also be used with caulking tubes that do not have points or nozzles. The extension member is made of flexible material so that the tube 22 can flex slightly as desired or required. Furthermore, a set or plurality of the extension members can be sold or merchandised in a package and said package may contain extension members of diflerent shapes or sizes.
The above description of the invention is for illustrative purposes only and it is understood that modifications may be made in the construction within the scope and spirit of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a caulking gun including a main body portion having a flange on its front end provided with a slot, a caulking tube contiguous to said main body portion and including a cylindrical casing and an end wall, a hollow nozzle extending forwardly from said end wall, an extension member including a rounded support member contiguous to said end wall, a tube extending from said support member and surrounding said nozzle, said tube being longer than said nozzle, said tube having a tapered formation so that the outer portion of the tube is less diameter than the other end portion thereof.
2. In a device of the character described, a caulking gun including a main body portion having a flange on its front end provided with a slot, a caulking tube contiguous to said main body portion and including a cylindrioal casing and an end wall, a hollow nozzle extending Refer Cit d i h file of hi patent forwardly from said end wall, an extension member in- 1 STATES- PATENTS cludmg a rounded support member contlguous to sand end wall, a tube extending fromfsaid support member and 1,080,320 Boggs Dec. 2, 1913 surrounding said nozzle, said tube being longer than 5 2,738,159 f P 9, 1957 said nozzle, said tube having a; tapered-formation so that 2,801,775 Slobm 6, 1957 the outer portion of the tube is of less diameter tllartt he other end portion thereof, said extension being fell'arimte'd. of a single piece of yiel'dablematerial. i
