BORlNG ATTACHMENT FOR MORTISING=MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,236, dated March 18, 188 2,
Application filed August 9, 189.3. (No model.)
machines used in car and other similar work,v
in combining in a compact and convenient manner an attachment for boring mortises with an auxiliary attachment for boring boltholes; and to this end it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of mechanism for driving both the main and auxiliary boring attachments from the main counter-shaft and pulley under control of the operator, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Mechanism embodying our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the mortising or boring machine, omitting in this and the following figures all parts excepting those concerned in driving the boring-tools. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken through the frame of the machine, and through the counter-shaft and bearings of the main boring attachment.
The parts hereinafter referred to are indicated in the drawings by letters of reference.
In the figures of the drawings, A designates the frame of the machine; B, the principal counter-shaft, from which the mortiser and boring attachments are driven; and Q G, the counterfshafts of the main and auxiliary boring attachments, respectively. The two latter shafts are jonrnalcd in parallel bearings at the sides of the supporting-column A, the
' boring-bits a b being-arranged vertically in suitable housings and rotated by intermeshing bevel-gears in the usual manner. The
counter-shaft B is provided with the ordinary fast and loose pulleys, c (I, by which the ma chine receives its power from the line-shafting of the establishment or other source, and transmits its power by a pulley, e, of sufficient width to permit its belt to be shifted from one to another of two adjacent pulleys, f 9, upon the counter-shaft O, which thus receives its power. The pulleyf is secured to the countor-shaft G at its end, and drives the' main boring-bit a directly. The pulley 9, however, is secured upon a loosely-rotating sleeve, 71 embracing the shaft (3 and extending inward through the bearing The sleeve extends far enough to carry a pulley, j, by which it transmits its power to the auxiliary countershaft 0 and bit I). The pulley j is of double width, and is arranged opposite fast and loose pulleys m n upon the counter-shaft C',the belt passing through the frame or supporting column A, which has a suitable aperture for the purpose, and a proper shifting device'being provided under control of the operator.
In operation, the belt 9 is normally in the position shown in Fig. 2, engaging the pulley g and the sleeve h. The belt is then engaging the loose pulley m of the counter-shaft 0 both boringbitsare at rest. Either one of the bits may be thrown into operation, as may be desired, by shifting the proper belt to the adjacent pulley. Thus the belt g being shifted from its indicated position to engagement with the pulleyf, the boring-bit a will be operated; but the belt 5/ being restored to its indicated position, and the belt is shifted to engage the fast pulley at of the counter-shaft G, the bit I) will be brought into operation.
WVe claim as our invention and desire to se- -'cure' by Letters Patent- 1. In a mortising' and boring machine, the
main and auxiliary boring attachment arranged relatively to each other, substantially as described, driving mechanism leading from the main counter-shaft to one of the boringshafts, and driving mechanism, substantially as described, leading therefrom to the other boring-shaft, and mechanism for throwing the latter into or outof operation, all in combination, substantially as set forth. 2. In a mortising and boring machine, main and auxiliary boring attachments at opposite sides of the supporting-column, a belt connecting thesame, means for throwing said belt into or out of operation, a counter-shaft on the main frame, and a belt connecting this with one of the boringshafl's, all combined and arranged to operate as set forth.
3. In combination, in a mortising-maohine having boring attachments, a counter-shaft mo Y journaled on the main frame and connected to the main boring-spindle, a fixed pulley on said counter-shaft, an adjacent pulley secured to a loose sleeve, the auxiliary boring-tool and its 5 counter-shaft driven from said pulley on the sleeve, and the driving-belts, all combined substantially as stated.
4'. In a mortising-machine, the combination of the boring counter-shaft 0, having thereon 10 a fixed pulley, f, and a loose sleeve, h, carrying pulleys g and j, with a second boring countershaft, 0, provided with fast and loose pulleys m '11, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals in'the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
