1 Claim. (Cl. 229-20) My invention relates generally to box construction and more specifically to folding paper boxes and the like which have telescopic inner and outer sections.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a box, including preferably elongated generally rectangular telescoping box-like inner and outer sections, which is particularly adaptable for the packaging, shipment and storage of check blanks and the like.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class immediately above described in which said outer section includes top and bottom walls, opposed sidewalls and an inner wall having an open outer end for the snug slideable reception of said inner wall, said inner section including a bottom wall, opposed side walls and a flap element formed integrally with the bottom wall and forming an inner end wall and a partial top wall, a shoulder-defining member on the inner surface of one of the side walls of said outer section (preferably in the nature of an integrally formed backturned extension of the outer end of said side wall), a portion of said flap element defining a shoulder-forming portion intermediate adjacent side walls of said inner and outer sections and cooperating with said shoulder-defining member to limit outward sliding movements of said inner section with respect to said outer section.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class immediately above described in which said outer sections, preferably the top and bottom walls, one side wall and the inner end wall thereof, are formed to provide a longitudinally extended notch to facilitate imparting of outward sliding movements to said inner section with respect to said outer section.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class immediately above described in which the top wall of said outer section is provided with a sight opening which is longitudinally outwardly spaced from the free end of said partial inner top wall and which permits inspection of the contents of said inner section when said inner section is totally received within said outer section.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class described in which the bottom wall of said inner section is formed with a flap at its outer end which defines an outer end wall and a partial outer top wall, the inner edge of which is spaced from said sight opening in all relative positions of said sections.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class described in which both the inner and outer sections may be stamped from a single sheet of paper stock and the like and which may be completely assembled by machinery.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a box of the type above described which is relatively inexpensive to produce, which is relatively strong and durable and which is easy and foolproof in its operation.
The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claim and attached drawings.

Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates in its entirety an elongated generally rectangular outer box section, whereas the numeral 2 indicates in its entirety the inner box section slidably telescopically receivable within the outer box section 1. As shown in Fig. 5, the outer box section 1 may be stamped from a single sheet of paper stock 3, whereas the inner box section 2 may be stamped from a. single sheet of paper stock as indicated by the numeral 4. Outer box section 1 includes front and rear walls 5 and 6 respectively, opposed side walls 7 and 8 and an inner end wall 9. The outer end of the box section 1 is opened for the slideable reception of the inner box section 2 as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3. The front wall 5 is provided with a generally rectangular sight opening 10 which is centered longitudinally of the section 1, for a purpose which will hereinafter be explained in detail. Alsothe front and rear walls 5 and 6, the inner end wall 9 and the side wall 7 are cut away to provide a longitudinally extending notch 11 to facilitate the imparting of outward sliding movements of the inner section 2 with respect to the outer section 1. As shown in Fig. 5, the opposed side Walls 7 and 8 are formed with tab-like extensions 7a and 8a respectively which are back-turned as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to. define shoulders 7b and 8b on opposite sides of the interior of the box section 1, the function of which will hereinafter be explained in greater detail.
The inner section 2 comprises a bottom wall 12, opposed side Walls 13 and 14, a flap element at its inner end identified in its entirety by the numeral 15, and a flap member on its outer end identified in its entirety by the numeral 16. The flap element 15, as shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 3, defines an inner end wall 17 and a partial inner top wall 18, the free edge 19 of which is spaced from the sight opening 10 to permit inspection of the contents Within the inner box section 2 when said inner section 2 is totally received within the outer section 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
As shown particularly in Figs. 3 and 6, opposite side edges of the partial inner top wall 18 are formed to provide tabs 20 and 21 which are hinged along fold lines 22 and 23 respectively so as to be received between the side walls 7 and 8 of the outer box section 1 and the side walls 13, 14 of the inner box section 2, when bent at right angles to the partial top wall 18. In such position, the free edge portions 24 and 25 of the tabs 20, 21 respectively define shoulders which respectively engage the shoulders 7b, 8b, whereby to limit outward movement of the inner box section 2 beyond substantially the position shown in Fig. 2. Referring again to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the tab-forming opposite side edges 20, 21 of the inner flap element 15 are formed with hinged ears 26 and 27 respectively which engage the inner end Wall 17 in opposed relationship, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, in underlying relationship to the partial inner top wall 8. This arrangement greatly reinforces the entire inner end of the inner section 2.
The flap member 16, on the outer end of the bottom wall 4 of the inner section 2, is folded to provide. an outer end wall 28 and a partial outer top wall 29, the free edge 30 of which is spaced from the sight opening in all positions of sliding movement of the inner section 1 with respect to the outer section 2.
As above indicated, my novel box is particularly adapted for use in the packing, shipping and storage of check blanks or the like identified by the letter A. Through the sight opening 10, the user may at all times keep informed as to the quantity of check blanks A remaining within the inner section 2, without slidably moving the inner section 2 with respect to the outer section 1, as indicated in Fig, 2. ,However, when said user desires to remove a number of check blanks A from within the inner section 2, it is but necessary to apply pressure on the end wall 17 of the inner section 2, through the slot 11, while holding the outer section 1 against movement. As above indicated, engagement of the shoulders 24, 25 respectively with the shoulders 7b, 8b limits further outward movement of the inner section 2 with respect to the outer section 1. However, the longitudinal dimensions of the outer-partial top wall 29 are such as to cause said wall 29 to be totally exposed when said shoulders 24, 25 are in engagement with the shoulders 7b, 8b. Therefore, the outer flap member 16 will be caused to assume substantially the position of Fig. 2, in which position the contents such as check blanks A may be readily removed.- Preferably and as shown, one longitudinal side edge of the partial outer top wall 29 is formed with a hinged extension 31 which, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, is backturned upon itself to define a suitable pocket for stamps B or the like.
My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects and while I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof, I wish it to be understood that same In'a device of the class described, inner and outer generally rectangular telescoping box-like sections, said outer section including top and bottom walls, opposed side walls and an inner end wall and having an open outer end for the snug slideable reception of said inner section, integrally formed backturned shoulder-defining tabs on the outer ends of said side walls, said inner section including a bottom wall, opposed side walls and flaps on opposite ends of said bottom wall which form inner and outer end walls and longitudinally spaced partial inner and outer top walls, opposite side edges of said partial inner top wall being formed to provide angular shoulder-defining tabs which permit telescopic assemblage of said sections but which cooperate with the first-mentioned shoulder-defining tabs to limit outward movement of the inner section with respect to the outer section, the top wall of said outer section being provided 'with a sight opening which is spaced from the opposed free ends of the inner and outer partial top walls of said inner section when said inner section is totally received within said outer section whereby to permit inspection of the contents of said inner section therethrough, the top and bottom walls, inner end wall and one side wall of the; 'outer section cooperating to define a longitudinally extended notch to facilitate imparting sliding movements to the inner section with respect to said outer section, the longitudinal dimensions of said notch being not substantially greater than the space between said first and second mentioned shoulder-defining tabs when said inner section is totally received within said outer section, whereby the inner end wall of said inner section has been moved sub stantially the length of the notch when said shoulder? defining tabs are in abutting engagement, the partial inner top wall of said inner section completely underlying and closing said sight opening when said shoulder-defining tabs are in abutting engagement.
