No. 674,743
2 Claims. (Cl. 24-222) This invention relates to two-part separable fastening devices for connecting together overlapping edge or end portions of articles of wearing apparel, being specially suitable for detachably connecting the ends of trouser waistbands.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved separable fastening device which is simple in construction, which can be easily and quickly connected and disconnected, which is of shallow thickness so as not to be detrimental to the appearance of the garment to which it is attached, and which is not liable to be easily crushed while the garment is being pressed, laundered or otherwise treated.
According to the invention a fastening device for connecting together two overlapping edge or end portions of articles of wearing apparel comprises two separable parts, one part consisting of a member having a base part or parts adapted to seat upon and to be secured to one of the overlapping edge or end portions of the wearing apparel and provided with integral edge portions or anges raised relatively to said base part or parts, and the other part consisting of a member adapted to be secured to the other overlapping edge or end portion of the wearing apparel and having two spaced-apart opposed anges or hook-shaped portions adapted to be slidably engaged with the raised edge portions or flanges of the first-named part, stop meansbeing provided upon one of the said parts to limit the relative sliding movement of the other part in one direction.
Also, according to the invention, a fastening device for connecting together two overlapping edge or end portions of articles of wearing apparel comprises two separable parts, one part consisting of a substantially rectangular plate having opposite longitudinal edge portions raised above a relatively depressed longitudinal middle or base portion adapted to be secured to one of the two overlapping edge or end portions of the wearing apparel, and the other part consisting of a member adapted to be secured to the other overlapping edge or end portion of the wearing apparel and having two spaced-apart opposed flanges or hook-shaped portions adapted to be slidably engaged with the raised edge portions of the first-named part, stop means being provided upon one of said parts to limit the relative sliding movement of the other part in one direction.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a front elevational view of the one part of a two-part separable fastener intended for the waistband of trousers and constructed in accordance with the Patented Aug. 30, 1960 iCS Figure 6 is a rear perspective view of the part of the fastener shown in the preceding figures, before attachment to the waistband.
Figure 7 is a front elevational view of the other part of the two-part fastener.
Figure 8 is a rear elevational view of the part shown in Figure 7, showing the means of attachment to the waistband material.
Figure 9 is a vertical section on line IX-IX, Figure 7.
Figure 10 is a vertical section through both parts of the fastener shown connected together.
Figures 1l and 12 show a modified construction of the first-shown fastener part,
Figure l1 being a front elevational view of the part attached to the material of a waistband, and
FigureilZ being a rear perspective view.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 6 thereof, the one part 1 of the two-part fastener consists of a sheet-metal plate of rectangularshape, opposite longitudinal side portions of which are raised or cranked at 2, 2 (Figure 3) relatively to a at longitudinal middle or base portion 3. The raised side portions form flat elevated and parallel ` flanges 4, 4, lying in a common plane parallel to the plane of the middle or base portion 3, the latter forming, with the said side portions, a shallow open-ended longitudinal groove or depression of uniform width. The transverse width of each of the said raised side portions or anges 4, .4, is about equal to the width of the relatively-depressed middle portion 3, and the outer edges 5 of the two side anges 4, 4, are parallel to one another. The said middle or base portion 3 is adapted to be seated upon the face of the material 7 of one end of the waistband, as shown in Figure 3, so that the longitudinal side anges 4, 4, are raised above the said material 7, leaving spaces 9, 9; and in order to secure the device to the material one end of the middle or base portion 3 is formed with an integral prong 6 initially projecting downwards at rightangles to the plane of said base portion, and the ends of the two side flanges 4, 4, remote from said pronged end of the middle or base portion 3 are also provided with similar integral prongs 8, 8, initially projecting downwards at right-angles, and shouldered near their roots at 81. These two prongs 8, S, on the flanges 4, 4, close the one end of the spaces 9, 9, between the undersides of the said flanges and the material 7, but the other ends of said spaces are open.
The above-described flanged member 1 of the device is attached to the waistband with the pronged ends of the anges 4, 4, nearest to the free end' of the said waistband. it is secured in place by passing the prongs through the material 7 and through apertures in a separate sheet-metal back-plate 10, the prongs being then bent or clenched over on to the face of the latter, as shown in Figure 2.
The second member 111 of the fastener is shown in Figures 7 to 9, and consists of a plate or strip of sheetmetal adapted to be attached in a vertical position to the other end of the waistband, and having its top and bottom ends bent over forwardly and inwardly towards each other to form opposed hooks or flange parts 12, 12, the ends of which are separated by a distance rather greater than the width of the middle base portion 3 of the flanged member 1 of the device. This second member 11 of the fastener has two attachment prongs 13, 13, pressed out of the flat base portion 111 between the hooks 12, 12, so as initially to project rearwards at rightangles. The member 11 is attached to the waistband by passing the prongs 13, 13, through the material 15 thereof and through apertures in a back-plate 14, being then bent or clenched over as shown in Figure 8.
The two parts 1 and 11 of the fastenerl are engaged bythe hooks l2, 12. ,Y Y
ln the modication shown in Figures ll and 12, the
flanged member l has prongs 17, 17, pressed out of the middle oase portion 3 instead `of an integral prong being formed at the end of this latter part as in the tiret-described construction. These prongs 17, 17, are similarly adapted to be passed through the waistband material through corresponding apertures in a backplate and to be clenched over to secure the fitting.
instead or the respective hanged and hook-carrying parts ll, l1, of the fastener carrying integral prongs, some second part consisting of a member formed at opposite edges with two spaced-apart inturned flanges adapted to be slidably engaged with the raised edge portions of the first part; the prongs on the raised edge portions of the first part serving as stops for limiting relative inward sliding movement of the .second part.
2. A two-part separable fastening device for wearing apparel, comprising a rst part consisting of a substantially rectangular sheet-'metal plate having opposite 1ongitudinal edge portions, and a relatively depressed .longitudinal middle lbase portion, said edge portions constituting flanges elevated albove said middle base portion, at least one attachment prong on said middle base portion, a
or all the prongs may be carried on the corresponding back-plates it? or 14 so as to co-operate with corresponding apertures in the said parts for securing the latter to the waistband material.
Or, it desired, both of said parts 1 and 11 of the fastener may be attached to the waistband material by stitching, in which case the outer ends of the flanges 4 on the one part l would be bent down suiciently to form stops for the hook portions 12 of the other part.
I claim: g
l1. A two-part separable fastening device for wearing apparel comprisinU a first part consisting of a plate having opposite longitudinal edge portions raised above a relatively depressed longitudinal middle base portion, at least one attachment prong on said -base portion, and a separate attachment prong locatedat one end of each of the raised edge portions and extending transversely to the direction of the longitudinal edge portions; and a separate attachment prong located at one end kof each of the elevated edge portions and comprising shouldered portions for seating on the surface of the garment material; a back-plate associated with said rst part for application to the underside of the garment material and for cooperating with said attachment prongs; and a second part consisting of a member having two spaced-apart inturned flanges adapted to be slidably engaged with the elevated edge portions of the rst part; the shouldered portion of the prongs on the elevated edge portions of the first part serving as stops for limiting relative inwards movement of the second part.
