To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLEMENT Manor, a citizen of the French Republic, residing'at Troyes, in the French Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Paintings. and other Analogous Works of Art, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, No. 155,204, under date of May 5, 1883;) and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clc r, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,

which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient means for carrying works of art in oil, pastel,water-colors,crayon, and other materials, when freshly executed or partially executed, without danger of injuring the picture or painting during its transportation. Artists and amateurs have en countered serious difficulties in carrying their sketches, studies, or paintings when executed from nature from the place where they are executed to their home or studio, and this is more especially the ease with pastel, crayon, or charcoal pictures, sketches, or studies, as the material cannot be indelibly fixed. By my invention I provide a light, convenient, and cheap device, whereby such articles may be safely carried withont'danger of becoming soiled or effaced while being so carried.

This is, however, not the case, as the dimensions of these boards, frames, or stretchers usually vary with each painting, sketch, or design. It'is therefore essential, to avoid the necessity of having a multiplicity of carriers, that such carrier should be constructed to accommodate j itself to all sizes and forms of boards, frames, or 'stretehers, within certain limits. Various means may be employed to effect this purpose, and in the accompanying drawingsI have illustrated a single and convenient construction of device whereby the object of .my invention may be attained.

The distance between the clamping-jaw G of the clamp C and jaw screw,when the latter is screwed out to its fullest extent, is such as to accommodate boards, frames, or stretchers of various thicknesses, within certain limits. As the rods R are pivoted or hinged to the clamp G, which provided with a boss or projection, 0*, for this purpose, which boss is preferably swiveled to the clamp, said rods may be adjusted to any desired angle relatively to the clamp,when in a vertical position, with the board, frame, or stretcher clamped thereto. The clamps O on the free ends of the rods R have an aperture through which the rods It pass, and in which they are clamped by means of the clampingscrews 0.

\V is a washer that fits around the screwpin 3 and between which washer and the upper section, 8, of the support S is clamped the cover A, which may be of any suitable textile or other material. I preferably employ a waterproof material, such as oil or rubber cloth. This cover is provided with cords a at its free edges, by means of which it is secured around the board, frame, or stretcher, as hereinafter explained.

For the purpose of securing the sections of the support S and the cover in position, and also for conveniently carrying the carrier and article supported thereby, I employ a socketed handle, H, the socket of which is screwthreaded and adapted to be screwed upon the screw-pin 8", the handle 11 being hinged or pivoted to its socket. This is one convenient way of securing the described parts together. Another convenient way of effecting this is shown in Figs. 1 to 4-. Instead of a screwpin, 5, the lower section, a, carries a stud or pin, 8", which is preferably square in crosssection,on which fits the washer V, and at a point close to the upper face of the latter, when in contact with the support S, the pin is perforated, the socket h of the handle H being also perforated, so that a retaining-pin,

The cover A, instead of being clamped between the washer and support S, may be provided with a metallic eyelet, E, that will encircle the washerlV. Rods It of different lengths may be employed, to vary the capacity of the carrier, and instead of employing clamping-sleeves G telescopic rods may be employed, and when adjusted the sections thereof may be secured in place by binding-screws or rods; or arms composed of sections capable of being screwed together may under some circumstances be used.

The mode of securing a board, B, or frame or stretcher to the carrier may be briefly de scribed as follows: Assuming the carrier to be dismembered and the board to be pol ygonal, as shown, the clamps Oare first clamped to opposite sides of the board at or near the corners. The rods R are then passed through the clamping-sleeves C of the rods 1%, and adjusted and secured in position by the clamp 0 on the ing-screws 0, so that the support S for the latter will be at a point above the longitudinal and transverse centers of said board, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The washer \V is now placed on the pin 3 and the cover A slipped over the same. Then the socketed handle is pinned to said stud or pin s", and, lastly, the four edges of the cover A, by means of the cords a, are tied together underneath the said board B, whereby a pyramidal covered structure is formed, having the board B for the base 'and the handle H for its apex, that side of the board containing the sketch, or drawing, or painting, facing said apex, as will be readily understood.

It will be seen that the object supported from the carrier may be conveniently carried, and is fully protected against contact with another body or against dust or rain.

Although the primary object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for carrying objects of art executed in oil or other material, yet I do not wish to limit myself to the exclusive use of the carrier to such objects, as other articles to be kept free from dust or rain may be carried thereby.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States, is

1. The herein-described carrier, consisting, essentially, of a series of arms or rods constructed of sections capable of being extended and eontracted,and when adjusted as to length locked in position, a handle-support to which one end of said rods is flexibly or pivotally connected, and a clamping device flexibly or pivotally connected to the other end of each rod, to which clamping device the object to be carried is secured, as described.

2. The herein-described carrier, consisting, essentially, of a series of rods or arms flexibly or pivotally connected with a support or handle at one end, and flexibly or pivotally connected at their other ends to fastening devices to which the article to be supported is attached, in combination with a flexible cover adapted to be secured to the support or handle and around the object carried by the carrier, as described.

3. Theherein-descril'ied carrier,consisting of a series of sectional or extensible and adjustable rods, a sectional handle or support to which one end of said rods is flexibly or pivotally connected, devices for securing the sections of the rods in the position to which they may be adjusted, and clamping devices flexibly or pivotally connected with the opposite end of said rods, and a flexible covering, A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
