UNITED STATES ,PATENT OFFICEQ \VILLIAM PRADDEX, OF LAWVRENGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
, SPOON.
SPECIFICATION for'ming part of Letters.Patent No. 294,910, dated March 11, 1884.
Application filed October 5, 1883.
IIcall wzo'm it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PRADDEX, of Lawrence, in the connty of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a 'certain new and useful Improvement in Spoons, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this sp'ecification,in which- Figurel is a top plan view of my improved spoon; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings. A
My invention relate more especially to that class of spoons employed in making pics; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and clai ned, by which a cheaper and more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvenent will be readily understood by all con- Versant with such matters 'from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the bowl, and B the handle, of the spoon, these parts being constructed of wood, metal, or any other suitable materials. i
Journaled horizontally in the outer end of the handle, on the pin :8, there is a small spur wheel or pinion, C, for crimping or producing an ornamental edge around the' crust of the Attached to the upper side of the handle' at its outer end there is a plate, D, and to the opposite side a plate, E, the plate D being elongated to form the blade G, and the plate E elongated and bifurcated to form the fo'rk H.
' Projecting laterally from the body of the handle there is a long thin blade, J, preferably composed of tin or sheet metal, which, when the handle is made of wood, may be inserted in a slot formed therein, and securcd by the (No model.)
rivets m, and when composed of metal may be formed integral with the handle; or it may be attached thereto in any suitable manner. The blade J is designed for trimming the pic, the knife G for pricking the crust of apple and the forl: .H the crust of mince pies. They also serve as guides for the wheel C, being pressed against the edge of the plate in crinping the pie., The knife and fork project in opposite directions, and each stand at an angle 'of about'siXty-five degrees to -thelongitudinal axial line of the spoon, or so that when the spoon is held by the handle and used for pricking the crust of the pie, the handle being elevated at an angle of about twenty-five degrees, the knife or fork, as the case may be, will Stand in a vertical position. The blade J not only serves as a knife to trim the crust of the pie, but aids materially in keeping the spoon from turning when it is grasped in the hand for use.
Having thus explained ny invention, what I claim is 1. The spoon, substantially such as described,
combined with the blade J, arranged substanti ally as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The spoon, substantially such as described, having the blade G, arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The spoon, substantiallysuch as described, combined with the fork H, arrangedsubstanti ally as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In aspoon substantially such as described, the wheel C, journaled in the outer end of the handle B, in combination with the fork H, substantially as specified.
In a spoon substantiall y such asdescribed, the wheel C, journaled in the outerend of the handle B, in combination with the forl: H and 'blade G, substantially as set forth.
