Description

1950 w. E. CAMPBELL 2,948,135
CANDLE HOLDER Filed July 22, 1957 INVENTOR. W/L L/flM 5. C/IMPBEL L United States Patent CANDLE HOLDER William E. Campbell, 4175 Valley St., Dayton, Ohio Filed July 22, 1957, Ser. No. 673,250
1 Claim. (Cl. 67-23) This invention relates to a candle holder and more particularly to a candle holder for supporting anniversary candles on a cake or the like.
Numerous types of candle holders have been designed for use with birthday cakes, et cetera, the majority of which consist of a candle holder adapted to be mounted on top of the cake. This is objectionable, in that there is a tendency for wax to drip on the cake. Also, candles obstruct the top of the cake, so as to interfere with decorations.
Furthermore, candles of various makes vary in size. That being the case, it is not unusual to find that a candle is either too large or too small for a holder.
An object of this invention is to provide a candle holder adapted to be supported on the side of a cake orthe like, the candle-receiving cavity of the holder tapering inwardly from the top to the bottom of the cavity, so as to accommodate candles of various sizes, the smaller the candle, the further down it goes into the cup-shaped cavity. By mounting the candles on the side of the cake, the entire top is made available for decorations. The candle holders may be made in various colors, as for example, the nursery colors, pink and blue.
Other objects and advantages reside in the construction of parts, the combination thereof, the method of manufacture and the mode of operation, as will become more apparent from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l discloses a cake having candle holders mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a candle holder drawn to a larger scale than that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the candle holder.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character designates a candle holder provided with spear-like supporting means 12 adapted to project into the sides of a cake 14. The candle holder 10 includes a cup-shaped portion 16 having a cavity 18 that tapers from top to bottom. This cavity is adapted to receive candles 20 of various sizes, so that the same candle holder may be used for a large variety of candles.
A plurality of annular cylindrical rings 22 and 24, cooperating with horizontally disposed flanges 26 and 28, support the cup-shaped portion v16. The annular rings 22 and 24 and the upper portion 30 of the cup-shaped portion 16 simulate a plurality of rings of equal heights connected by the horizontally disposed flanges 26 and 28 to provide a stepped candle holder adapted to be supported on the side of a cake, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
The cup-shaped portion 16 is supported above the center of the height of this portion by the horizontal flange 28, the vertical ring 24, the horizontal flange 26 and the vertical ring 22, so as to provide a substantial sup port for the candle holder. The elongate member or spear-like supporting means 12 is integral with thering 22 at a point remote from the candle holder.
"ice
The horizontal flanges 2S and 26 have been provided to catch the drippings from the candles. The drippings may flow along the side of the candle and on the outside of the upper portion 30, first landing on member 28. If member 28 doesnt retain all the drippings, some Will flow down to the flange 26.
As clearly seen in Figure 4, another advantage of utilizing the rings and the horizontal flanges to support the candle holder proper in the upper portion 30 is the fact that the portions between the rings 22 and 24 and the cup-shaped portion 16 result in a cavity reducing the amount of plastic material that is required.
The candle holder is preferably made from plastic. In order to reduce the Weight and save on materials, an annular cavity 32 is formed between the lower portion of the cup-shaped portion 16 and the rings 22 and 24. It is to be noted that the bottom of the cup-shaped portion 16 is located slightly above the level of the lower margin of the lower ring 22.
The horizontal flange portions, in addition to connect ing the rings, also function as receivers for the drippings from the candles, in that the rings and the horizontally disposed flange portions are considerably wider than the candle and thereby function to receive the drippings, so as to prevent the drippings from falling on the side of the cake or soiling the support for the cake.
As may be clearly seen in Figure 2, the candle holder may be referred to as a duo-functional candle holder, in that it may be supported on a table or any flat surface and need not necessarily be used as a candle holder for use on a cake. In candle holders used for supporting candles on top of a cake, there usually is a prong or a spike projecting downwardly into the cake, which prevents the use of the candle holders on a table or flat support without being associated with a cake.
Although the preferred embodiment of the device has been described, it will be understood that within the purview of this invention various changes may be made in the form, details, proportion and arrangement of parts, the combination thereof and mode of operation, which generally stated consist in a device capable of carrying out the objects set forth, as disclosed and defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A candle holder for use in supporting candles on an anniversary cake or the like, said candle holder including a cup-shaped body portion having a cavity tapering from top to bottom, and supporting means for the cup-shaped body portion including two annular cylindrical rings, one above the other, a horizontal annular flange portion for connecting the top margin of the upper ring to the outside and below the top of the cup-shaped body portion, a second horizontal annular flange portion for connecting the lower margin of the upper ring to the top margin of the lower ring, the cup-shaped body portion, the two flanges and the rings all having substantially the same thickness, and a horizontally and outwardly directed spearlike support extending outwardly from the bottom margin of the lowest ring and adapted to support the candle holder on the side of a cake or the like. 9
