3 Claims. (Cl. 162.-314) This invention relates to dandy rolls for paper making machines and'rnore particularly to novel means for mounting a dandy roll of the driven type.
The purpose of a dandy roll on a Fourdrinier type paper making machine is to smooth and finish the forming sheet on the Fourdrinier wire. The dandy roll eliminates bubbles, foam and major inequalities in formation, compacts the fibers, marks the web with a watermark pattern and finishes the sheet. In large modern paper making machines the dandy roll is of considerable weight and must be supported otherwise than on the sheet and wire itself. The most satisfactory arrangement for supporting adandy roll is a pair of circumferentially spaced rollers at each side. of the roll on which rides an annular flange forming a part of the roll. By this arrangement, the ends of the roll may be open for the convenient insertion and removal of a fixed tray which receives water from a spray pipe for dislodging fibers from the foraminous pheriphcry of the roll. A disadvantage of this arrangement is, however, that the conventional mechanism for driving the roll, which is required to reduce friction and inertia and to obviate relative differences in speed between the forming wire and the roll, is cumbersome and ineificient. Drives of this type have included open gearing or flexible drives such as belts or chains connected to one end of the roll. These drives had a tendency to become contaminated by the stock so that coordination of the speed of the roll with the speed of the wire was diflicult.
Accordingly, a principal object of the invention is to provide a dandy roll which has the advantages of the double roller construction and wherein an efficient and eflective means is afiorded the speed of which is readily and accurately controllable to conform to the speed of the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dandy roll wherein the drive connection to the roll is characterized by durability and ease of adjustment and may be positioned at a point removed from the wire so that contamination by the stock is minimized.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dandy roll in which a drive means is provided which is characterized by reliability of operation and improved functional characteristics.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide a dandy roll of the stated type in which the front end of the roll is open and is supported by a pair of spaced rollers and in which the other end is provided with an elongated hollow journal through which extends the fixed support element for the water trays and to which may be secured a pulley, gear or sprocket by means of which the roll may be driven.
The present invention contemplates other and more specific objects, features, and advantages which will become more fully apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in section and broken away, of a dandy roll made in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is an end elevational view, partly in section taken substantially on line II-T-II of Figure l and showing a spray pipe in operative position.
Referring now to the drawing, the dandy roll of the present invention is represented by reference numeral 19 and includes an end plate 12 having an outwardly extend.- ing annular flange 14 to which is secured an annular shoe 16 of wear-resistant material. At the opposite end of the roll '10 is an end plate .17 from which extends :an integrally formed, elongated, hollow journal 18. Extending between the end plates 12 and 17 is a suitable cylindrical framework (not shown) for supporting a screen 20 which forms the surface of the roll and may bear patterns for watermarking.
Mounted onspaced brackets 22, 22 (only one of which is shown) by means of pins 24, 24 are rollers 26, 26, which, as shown in Figure 2, are in rolling engagement with the periphery of the annular shoe 16. The brackets 22, 22 may be arranged on any fixed part of the paper making machine at one side of the forming wire. A bearing 28 supports the elongated hollow journal 18 and may be mounted on any suitable fixed part of the paper making machine alongside of the other edge of the forming wire. According to the present invention, the journal .18 is of sufiicient length as to extend beyond the screen 211 which comes into contact with the stock on the wire.
To the outer end of the journal 13 may be secured a pulley, gear or sprocket for driving the roll 10 at a point removed from the stock on the wire. In the form of the invention shown, a sprocket 30 having a plurality of circumferential grooves 32 for reception of a plurality of driving V-belts (not shown) is affixed by any suitable means such as press-fitting and the like to the journal 18. The V-belts may be driven by any suitable source of power such as an electric motor and the like. It will be understood, of course, that other power sources and power transmitting means may be utilized with equal effectiveness.
The flange 14 defines an'opening in the end plate 12 through which extends one end of a support bar 32, the other end of which passes through a passage 34 formed by the hollow journal 18. The left end of the bar 32, as viewed in Figure l, is carried by an upright standard 36 while the right end of the bar 32 is supported by an upright standard 38. The bar 32 supports a fixed water tray 40 while the roll .10 is rotated thereabout. A spray pipe 42 may be provided to wash fibers from the periphery of the screen 20, through the openings thereof and into the water tray 40. The opening defined by the flange 14 is dimensioned to afford sufiicient clearance of the tray 49. The provision of the passage 34 aflFords a convenient and simplified mounting for the tray 40. This feature is particularly important since the length of the roll 10, and consequently the bar 32, is substantial in modern paper making machines.
By the above described invention, all of the advantages of the open-front type of dandy roll are retained and yet the roll may be driven by a relatively simple meails. Moreover, the journal 18 is so dimensioned that the driving means is connected at a point remote from possible contamination by stock on the wire. A full length stationary support bar for the tray 40 may extend through the roll, as in the case in which both ends are open.
It will be understood that modifications and variations may be eflected without departing from the spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a hollow dandy roll provided with a foraminous surface and having plate members 4 secured at opposite ends thereof, the improvement which comprises an annular flange on one plate member defining with said plate member an opening therethrough of substantial diameter at the operating side of the roll to 'permit'ready visual and manual access tothe interior thereof, and a hollow journal on the other plate member of substantially greater length than the annular flange and defining with said other plate member an opening therethrough at the driving side of the roll of lesser diameter than the opening at'the operating side, the journal being of a length sufficient that driving means located on the end of said journal remote from the roll are essentially free of contact with stock deposited on the roll to avoid damage to the driving means therefrom, and said annular flange, plate members, dandy roll and journal providing a stepped passage extending entirely therethrough. g
2. In combination with a hollow dandy roll provided with aforaminous surface and having plate members secured at opposite ends thereof, the improvement which comprises an annular flange on one plate member defining with said plate member an opening therethrough of substantial diameter at the operating side of the roll to permit ready visual and manual access to the interior thereof, a hollow journal on the other plate member of substantially greater axial length than the annular flange and defining with said other plate member an opening therethrough at the driving side of the roll of lesser diameter than the opening at the operating side, and driving means connecting with the journal and located axially spaced from the roll to avoid damage to said driving means from stock deposited on the roll, and said annular 4 flange, plate members, dandy roll and journal providing a stepped passage extending entirely therethrough.
3. In combination with a hollow dandy roll provided with a foraminous surface and having plate members secured at opposite ends thereof, the improvement which comprises an annular flange on one plate member defining with said plate member an opening therethrough of substantial diameter at the operating side of the roll to permit ready visual and manual access to the interior thereof, a hollow journal on the other plate member of substantially greater axial length than the annular flange and defining with said other plate member an opening therethrough atVthe driving side of the roll of lesser diameter than the opening at the operating side, a water tray located essentially entirely Within the confines of the roll and support means for said tray extending axially outwardly through the openings at the operating and driving sides of the roll, and driving means connecting with the journal and located axially spaced from the roll to avoid damage to said driving means from stock deposited on the roll, and said annular flange, plate members, dandy roll and journal providing a stepped passage extending entirely therethrough.
