ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 1933 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE sUc'rIoN CYLINDER Mom FOR PAPER MAKING MACHINES 2 Claim.
This invention relates to paper making machines, and more particularly to a cylinder mold on which the stock is collected in the formation of the web of the paper, and has for the primary object the provision of a cylinder mold so constructed and operating in conjunction with a couch roll and having a suction means arranged therein and opposite to the couch roll so that the web of paper when formed will be free of defects 1 and permits any quality of paper to be made with increased tonnage over that produced by the conventional type of paper making machine.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating a suction cylinder mold mounted in a vat and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the cylinder mold and couch roll associated therewith.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating one of the ribs of the cylinder mold.
Figure 4 is 'a detail end view illustrating the means of adjusting the location of the suction box within the cylinder mold.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating a coupling for the vacuum pipe of the suction box .Q:
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a covering for the couch roll.
Figure '7 is a diagrammatical view illustrating my invention associated with a vat and various types of rolls and a conveyor.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a vat to receive the water and stock from which the paper is formed and has located therein a cylinder mold 2 constructed in accordance with the present invention. Standards 3, having bearings 4 rotatably support the. cylinder mold partially within the vat, as shown in Figure 7, by rotatably receiving the journals 5 of the mold. One of the journals 5 is of hollow formation to permit water to escape from the interior of the mold to a trough 6 associated with the usual fan pump for maintaining the water in circulation. The last referred to journal 5 carries a worm gear 7 meshing with a worm 8 of a power shaft 9 for the purpose of imparting 55 rotation to the cylinder mold.
The mold 2 includes end heads 10 secured to the journals 5 and have mounted thereon a cylindrical shell 11 provided with rows of openings 12. Annular retaining members 13 are carried by the heads f0 and project beyond the shell 11 and have positioned therebetween relatively spaced ribs 14, the latter secured to the retaining members 13 by fasteners 15. The openings 12 'of the shell 11 are arranged in parallel rows with one row disposed between each pair of ribs, the ribs having seating engagement with the periphery of the shell 11, also being slightly curved to conform to the contour of the shell. The ribs 14 are of substantially triangular shape in cross section, each rib having a straight face disposed 7 opposite to an inclined face of the adjacent rib so that the passage formed by a pair of ribs will converge towards the respective row of openings of the shell. The outer edges of the ribs are provided with notches 16 to receive annular sup- 7 porting bands or wires 17 on which is mounted an .outer shell 18 of wire mesh and on which the stock accumulates during the rotation of the mold in the vat 1.
'A suction box 19 is located within the cylinder mold and is'yieldably supported in engagement with the inner surface of the shell 11 and has connected thereto a vacuum tube, 20 extending through the hollow journal 5 of the mold, and is equipped with a coupling 21 for the purpose of connecting the tube 20 to a vacuum suction pipe 22. The coupling is of the adjustable type as shown in Figure 5 and will permit the tube 20 to turn slightly relative to the suction pipe 22 during the adjustment of the box within the cylinder mold. The suction box is carried by arms 23 having supporting portions 24 received in the journals 5. The arms 23 are of telescopic construction, the sections of which have interposed therebetween coil springs 25 to normally urge the suction box tightly against the shell 11. The suction box underlies several rows of openings 12 and is provided with flanged portions 26 for closing certain of the rows of openings which are adjacent to the rows of openings being acted upon by the suction within the box. a One of the heads 10 is provided with spaced slots 27 to admit the water to the interior of the cylinder mold from the vat and is also provided with a man-opening 28 for the purpose of permitting adjustments or repairs to be easily carried out upon the interior of the cylinder mold.
One of the supporting portions 24 is provided with a lever 29 having its free end positioned between adjusting bolts 30 carried by one of the 110 standards 3, whereby the position of the suction box may be slightly varied in either direction. This construction also against rotation with the cylinder mold.
A couch roll 31 is located directly above the suction box and contacts with the outer shell 18. A removable cover 32 is provided for the couch roll and preferably constructed from felt. The stock accumulating on the outer shell 18, when engaged by the couch roll, will be pressed and at the same time acted upon by suction from the box 19, removing the water from the web of the paper. The web of the paper passes from the cylinder mold onto an endless apron 33, as shown in Figure 7, and thence between a press roll 34 and a suction roll 35. The web or paper passes from the rolls 34 and 35 to press rolls 36 by the conveyor and thence to other parts of the machine for finishing. The suction rolls and press rolls remove the surplus water from the web of the,
paper so that when the paper is finally completed it will be free of defects. The-lowermost press roll has disposed thereon a box 3'1 for catching water therefrom, while the uppermost press roll 36 is engaged by a conventional type of doctor 38. The press roll 34 as well as the couch roll are engaged by doctors.
The conveyor 33 travels over guide pulleys 339 and a suction box for removing surplus water therefrom. The conveyor may be sprayed prior to reaching the suction box, as shown at 41, and also acted upon by a conventional type of wiper 42.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
maintainsthe suction box,
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A suction cylinder mold for paper making machines comprising supporting journals, sleeves rotatably supported by the journals, cylinder heads secured to the sleeves, means to deliver power to one of saidsleeves, a perforated inner shell carried by said heads, annular flanges secured to the heads and projecting beyond the she11,'spaced ribs carried by said flanges and engaging the shell with the perforations arranged therebetween, spaced bands mounted on the ribs, an outer foraminous shell carried by the bands and flanges, and a suction box mounted to said sleeves and engagingthe inner shell.
2. A suction cylinder mold for paper making machines comprising supporting journals, sleeves rotatably supported by the journals, cylinder heads secured to the sleeves, means to deliver power to one of. said sleeves, a perforated inner shell carried by said heads, annular flanges secured to the heads and projecting beyond the shell, spaced ribscarried by said flanges and engaging the shell with the perforations arranged therebetween, spaced bands mounted on the ribs, an outer foraminous shell carried by the bands and flanges, supporting members journaled in said sleeves and one of said members of hollow formation, arms carried by said members and including telescopic sections, springs between the sections of said arms, a suction box carried by the arms and urged into engagement with the inner shell by said springs, and a suction tube extending through the hollow member and connected to the suction box.
