GUSTAF ERICK ALINDER, OF ATHOL DAKOTA TERRITORY.
"CORN-HARVESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,715, dated March 4, 1884.
Application filed April 12,1883. (No model.)
To (0% whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF ERIcK ALIN- DER, of Athol, in the county of Spink and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boot hZLV. ing my improved corn-cutter attached. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the sole of the same with the cutter attached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutter. Fig. 4: is a side view of the sole detached, showing the studs or screws and their bosses. Fig. 5 isa plan view of the strap having the buckle and bifurcated ends. Fig. 6 is a side view ofone of the studs in the ends of the bifurcated strap; and Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the sole, showing the studs or screws. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of implements for cutting cornstalks which are adapted to be secured to the boot or shoe of the person cutting; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such an implement, adapted to be removably attached to the sole of a boot or shoe, and to project with its cutting-blade to the outside of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the outer sole of a boot or shoe, which is provided with three screws or studs, E and E, two, E E, of which are near the outer edge of the sole-while the third, E, is immediately under the ball of the foot, near the inner edge of the sole. These studs or screws are inserted through the sole of the boot or shoe, and are secured upon their inner ends with nuts or bosses J, which bear against the inner side of the outer sole, preventing the studs from being drawn out.
A is a rectangular, slightly downwardly 5o bulged plate, bent or turned up at 13, adapted to follow the curve of the outer edge of the sole, and extended laterally, forming a triangular cutter-blade, 0, having beveled and sharpened edges,'the entire plate and cutterblade being preferably made out of one piece of steel. This plate has two slots, D D, near the outer edge, having enlarged inner ends,.
and pointing outward with their outer ends, and two similar slots, D, are in the inner corners of the plate, pointing with their narrow outer ends toward the corners, while a round perforation, H, is cut in the plate between the last-mentioned two slots near the inner edge. The upturned portion B is provided with two slots, I, similar to the slots in the plate, and pointing upward with their reduced ends.
G is a strap, consisting of two portions, L
slots D, and sliding the plate sideward until the heads of the screws bear over the edges of the narrower portions of the slots, when the perforation in the plate is slipped over the stud under the ball of the foot, which will hold the inner portion of the plate.
To further secure the plate, one pair of studs upon the strap are inserted and secured in the slots D D, near the inner edge of the plate,
the other pair of studs inserted and secured in the slots I I in the upturned portion of the plate, and the strap buckled together over the foot, thus securing the plate and cutter from becoming loose if, by accident, one or more of the studs upon the sole should become disengaged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the sole of a boot or a shoe, having two studs near its outer edge and one near its inner edge, under the ball of the foot, and a rectangular plate having an up turned portion, a laterally-projecting cutterblade, two slots near its outer edge, having slots, one at each end, having theirlower ends enlarged inner portions, and a perforation near the inner edge, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the sole of a hoot or shoe, having two studs near its outer edge and a stud near its inner edge, under the ball of the foot, a plate provided with four slots, one in each corner, having enlarged inner ends, a perforation near its inner edge, and having an upturned portion terminating in a laterally extending cutter-blade, and provided with enlarged, and an adjustable strap having bifurcated ends provided with headed studs, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto alfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GUSTAF ERICK ATJXDER.
