Be it known that I, ELIEL L. SHARPNEOK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Rotary Drilling-Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to that class of rockdrills which are designed to be run by steam, compressed air, or other motive power, and adapted to be held in the hands of the operator .whilein operation; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

A is the casing of the engine, constructed as shown, and screwed into or otherwise secured to the head B, which head is provided with a socket, b, to receive a rod, 0, which is preferably hollow, and carries the handles D E.
At F is shown a cylinder, provided with journals G G at top and bottom; and a hard-- ened-steel center, H, which works in a steel step, I, set in the head B. The lower end of the cylinder carries the drill-spindle J, which I prefer to be diamond-pointed and keyed fast to the cylinder, and to work through a hollow ring, K, set in the stuffing-box M. This ring 7 screwed into the stuffing-box. Packing V is set in the stuffing-boxon each side of the ring K, and is adjusted by the gland N andjamnut O. and has perforations connecting it with the recess in the ring K, and thus water from the pipe L will pass through the perforations into the drill, and asit issues from the bottom thereof will keep the drill cool and wash the pulverized rock out of the hole.
With this construction and arrangement'a light, cheap drilling apparatus is produced that can be made'to work very rapidly, carried into and worked in any desired position, and one that; will be very durable and not liable to get out of order. Being provided with handles arranged as shown, it can be readily held in any desired position, and will be found very convenient in positions where other drills cannot be used, as itcan be used with the engine held in narrow crevices,where a man could not stand to operate such drills as have heretofore been devised for this purpose. By means of the long handle projectthe drill can not be held in where the operator has to grasp handles arranged at the side of the englne. I
I do not limit myself to the exact construction of the engine, as it-is evident that any style of cylinder and pistons may be employed with my handles. v
' What I claim as new is l. A rotary engine having its revolving and operating cylinder provided with journals at its opposite sides, one of which has a socket for'a drill and the other a conical center bearing, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a rotary engine having an elongated journal, forming a bearing for a socket for a drill, of the rod 0, provided with the handles D and E, substantially as described.
.3. The combination, with the casing A, of the head B, provided with a step, I, and socket b, the rod 0, handles D-E, cylinder F, having center H, drill J, and pistons I, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
